In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I haven't seen something that you should improve on so far as everything has been running smoothly as promised. Thank you for uplifting my life and that of other through the unconditional cash transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband is a peasant farmer and for the last two years, he has never grown anything in our farms due to drought. Buying food became our new norm and we have only been able to afford one meal per day. I have been bearing all the family responsibilities through selling charcoal, a business that has been greatly affected by deforestation. Due to these financial constraints, we have not been able to build our children a separate room since we have been sharing a single room with them. Being enrolled in the program was a good opportunity for me to save towards building them a house. I spend my recent transfer to buy two iron sheets and I'm planning to add eleven more enough to roof a single room that I'm planning to build for my kids.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was engrossed in my morning household chores when I heard my phone ringing, an alert of an incoming message. My husband helped me check who the sender was. The smile on his face showed that it could be some good news. I was greatly overjoyed when he finally disclosed to me that indeed GiveDirectly had sent the transfer. I thanked them for honouring their promise to us in our time of need.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Selling charcoal has been the only source of income that I depend on to fend for my family. I could sell only a sack of charcoal at KES 500 once a week. I do not do this job daily due to health issues but when I fail to sell it becomes hard to provide for my family. The money however has not been enough and I could stay without food sometimes or skip meals. My husband who also depends on casual jobs was not working most of the days. I am happy that receiving this monthly transfer has enabled me to buy a bale of maize flour which served us for weeks.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have depended on subsistence farming for many years from which I could get a good harvest to feed my family. However, there has been a prolonged drought that has made it impossible to do crop farming. This has forced me to rely on selling charcoal as a source of income. In a week, I sell one sack which goes for KES 500 since burning charcoal is tiresome and physically draining. The money is not enough to take care of my family's most important basic needs. My husband also does casual jobs which are unpredictable. I could not afford three meals a day, I had to skip so as to minimize expenditure. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because the transfer helped me to buy enough foodstuff for my family. I purchased a bale of maize flour that could serve us for some weeks without skipping meals.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
After a long day's work, one is supposed to have a restful night to be re-energized for the coming day. This is not the case on my end as I have no bed at home. I spend all my night sleeping on the floor(natural earth floor). It is uncomfortable and I usually wake up feeling so tired. I will purchase a bed and a mattress for around 18,000 KES. The rest of the money will be for renovating my house. I will support it with pillars to boost its durability.
What is the happiest part of your day?
During the new year, we converged as a family after being apart for a whole year. I was overjoyed as I had a chance to unite with my children and in-laws. We celebrated and partook in special meals together.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a housewife and I completely depend on my husband to provide for my needs. His business is not paying well. He manages to earn 500 KES on a brighter day from his charcoal business. This money cannot cater for household needs as well as pay schools levies for our daughter who is in form four.
