How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would like to complete the flooring of the house. After completing the plastering and the roofing, which took most of our transfer. My husband was motivated to have a completely renovated house, especially with the coming of our son. This is the only goal because the dust floor would affect him. I plan to ask my husband to buy the bags of cement in installments and begin the exercise room after room. We can start with the room we sleep in until we complete the rest of the house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly was a miracle in my life. The funds came at the time I needed them. They enrolled me when I was still pregnant and used to work as a charcoal burner, which was not ideal for my condition. At the time of delivery, my husband had nothing, and we even planned to deliver my child at home, which is risky. I will forever be grateful for the support program. I see nothing that the organization is not doing well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We are a family of five members and my husband works as a casual laborer on construction sites or as a motorcycle rider. He earns as little as $20 in two weeks. As soon as I got enrolled in the program, we renovated my home because it was on the verge of collapsing, and with the coming of my third child, it would not be the best environment to raise our newborn child. I used my first transfer in renovating the house and school fees for my only child at school. The second transfer of $240 was used to complete the renovations, which were plastering a two-roomed house and a verandah and I used $40 in the hospital during the delivery of my son. We spent the remaining $250 on food and newborn items, like diapers and clothes, that I needed. I was grateful because, at the moment of transfer, I was in labor and with no savings to even pay for a government hospital. In addition, the household didn't have sufficient food and my husband was still looking for a job.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The message came in at about five in the evening that day when I was just about to begin making dinner for my family. I was more than elated to see that I had received the funds especially since the organization had actually kept its word because when I was getting enrolled the program seemed too good to be true but I was definitely proven wrong.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
In my opinion, I an definitely glad that I finally get to sleep comfortably in a bed. Sleeping on a bed almost seemed a luxury to me but I am glad that through the funds I managed to finally own a bed. Apart from that, I am glad that I also managed to keep my child in school which means quite a lot to me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I got enrolled together with my grand mother I made sure to give her half of transfer and we both ended up with KES 26,500. My first purchase is that I went on to buy beddings which included a bed and mattress which cost me KES 9,000. That was my first purchase because I had been sleeping on a sisal bed for quite a long time because I could afford a bed. Afterwards I paid KES 3,000 in school fees for my child because she had been kicked out of school and had been home for close to a week. Lastly, I spent the balance I was left with gradually and ensured that there was always a meal since it was always a challenge due to drought and the high cost of living.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of four members. I separated with my husband in 2020. We separated because I am suffering from epilepsy and he said that he cannot live with a sick person. Since then, my life has been full of struggles. I am working as casual labor and earning approximately KES 300 per day. This is not enough for the family necessities. My daughter never did her end-term examination last term due to lack of school fees. I will use KES 60000 for my medication. I have hope that I will heal up completely. I will also use KES 40000 to buy ten goats as an investment. This will help me get enough fees for my children to proceed with their learning in future. The remaining amount will be used to buy food for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month, I got a doctor at Mariakani hospital who diagnosed me and gave me hope of healing up completely. The medication has revived hope of me living without stress. I am also happy that the GD money will help me get the right dose for the sickness I have. May God bless Givedirectly and all the donors.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am suffering from epilepsy and this started when I was very young. The sickness has caused divorce in my marriage. It is so painful to raise a family alone and I am sick. This has caused a lot of stress to me. Sickness is the current challenge I am passing through in life.
