How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The plan I had was to pay for the medication that I had started after undergoing a scanning catered for by the first transfer. I had obtained some of the recommended and prescribed medicines but not all, so with this transfer all I wanted was to complete the medication. This is because I was almost bedridden and I could not even help with the duties around the house, so I wanted to be in good health and fulfil my responsibilities.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The organization is generally doing us good, especially with the power it is giving us to decide on the challenge we need to address unlike being given conditions on what to do with the aid we are given. I am grateful and in my opinion, I do not see anything that GiveDirectly is not doing right.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on my husband's motorcycle, which took a total of KES18000 in repairs and service. This was very important because we do not have available tap water close to us. We always spent approximately KES750 weekly to pay for water transport services offered by other motorcycle taxis. This was very expensive in that at times we would run out of water within the week and we will be forced again to seek the services of the motorcycle taxis. Therefore repairing our motorcycle gave us a very huge relief, we nolonger have to worry about running out of water in the house within the week.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Being a housewife, I was in my house doing my morning chores like preparing breakfast for the family. I had just arrived from fetching water at the nearby water pan. I heard a message ringtone on phone,I stopped what I was doing and check the it. I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt very happy and immediately I called my husband who was at work to inform him about the receipt of the transfer. He was happy to hear the good news about our transfer which would transform our lives for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Able to get proper medical care for the heart, liver, and kidney problems after undergoing treatment with the help of the transfer is the biggest difference in my daily life. Currently, I am living a stress-free life after recovering well from the illness. Previously, I did not have the finances to seek proper medication something that made my life miserable. I was not able to do some of my roles as a wife in the house because of my health problems.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My desire has been to restart daily farming which I had been doing sometimes back but I lacked the finances to accomplish it. Initially, I owned a dairy cow but it was infected with a chronic disease, My effort to treat it was in vain and it succumbed to death. After receiving the transfer, I spent KES 15000 to purchase a local dairy cow, this is a future investment for my family. My long term goal is to educate my kids with the male offsprings of the cattle once they grow up. In addition, I support my spouse's mechanic business by purchasing more working tools for KES 5000. This is because he had less tools in his kit at the garage, sometimes he would came stressed up because of the poor working conditions. I also bought proper beddings for my 3 children they were using a small, worn-out mattress which was not enough for them. Furthermore, I spent 15,000 to seek proper medical care for myself since I am suffering from heart, liver, and kidney problems. I was able to go for screening and purchased the medicine need for my treatment. Currently, I am recovering well and I thank the organization for the support..

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A stable source of income for my household is generally what receiving this money means to me. Currently, I am a housewife, and I depend on my husband who is a mechanic but his income is very inconsistent because he is just a casual employee. We have desired to start our workshop but this has never been possible due to financial instability. The cash grant from GiveDirectly will help me to realize my dream because I plan to spend a big portion of the first transfer ($500) to start the workshop. This will mean more income to my family since I believe this work pays a lot. With the second transfer, I intend to spend $150 to buy 5 goats to act as my long-term investment project and the remaining amount will support to reinforce my house with hardcore as well as to smooth-finish the floor.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day because waking up with my family healthy gives me the feeling of happiness. Unlike in the afternoon and evening hours when in most cases, I get so tired with the strenuous household chores and farm work which are very exhaustive activities.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a stable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. Being a housewife yet the income from my husband is inconsistent, I have gone through a lot of stress seeing him struggling to put food on the table. Sometimes this gives me the feeling of being an irresponsible spouse something that pisses me off. I am now a happy person after knowing that, soon, my husband will have a stable source of income and I will also be busy at home looking after my goats.
