How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, after achieving most of my goals that I had , I don't have any new goals. I just intend to boost the shop business that I started as a partnership with my children. Achieving this will make sure that we can comfortable meet our basic needs like food.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for coming into our village and enrolling me in the program. With the aid, I was able to achieve a lot especially the livestock rearing an investment that will support the family in case of any emergency. I have benefited a lot from the transfer and there is nothing that Givedirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Constructing a decent house was the dream that I had. This is because the house that I own earlier was old, grass-thatched and it was leaking because the grasses had decomposed. I bought 20 iron sheets for KES 17,600 for the construction of the new house. I also invested KES 31,000 on livestock rearing by purchasing one cow and 4 goats a long-term investment for the family. I will be able to sell them when they multiply to cater for any emergency. Lastly, I used the remaining amount to boost the shop business that we had started as a partnership with my 3rd born child. Through this business, we can now meet our needs without struggling unlike before something I am grateful for.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am, and I had just returned home from getting some water. I immediately heard a message, which turned out to be a Mpesa message. I was overjoyed to learn that I had received my transfer. I had never imagined receiving such a large sum of money thus I could not stop myself from telling my family about my good fortune. They were equally pleased and relieved because none of them had anticipated that we would receive such a large sum of money. We were all aware that, eventually, we would be able to construct a new house to replace the old one.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For a long time, I had been working for people on their farms for payment in order to raise money for buying food for my family. This was a very hard life that more often was wearing me down. Courtesy of the transfer, I have been able to easily obtain food hence I do not engage in hard labor to earn a living. In addition, I have been able to concentrate on my farm. Furthermore, I have my own business that is currently doing well. Thanks to GiveDirectly for its generous support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As soon as I received my transfer I spent KES 30,000 on buying some iron sheets and timber for building a new spacious house. I opted to build a new house because the previous one was old and leaky and I could not renovate it due to lack of money. As a result, I did not have any comfort during rainy seasons. In addition, I spent KES 10,000 on starting a business dealing with foodstuff. Consequently, I can often raise some profit which helps me in obtaining food for my family. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the help accorded to me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a spacious house for my family. I am currently living in a one bedroom house together with my grandchildren and it lacks privacy. I will build a two bedroom house at a cost of KES 80000. I will also use KES 20000 to buy one cow as investment. The remaining KES 10000 will be used to buy food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Our village has faced drought for the last two years. It is hard to get clean water for domestic use. A 20 litre plastic of water goes at KES 50. Last week, we received relief water from county government of Kilifi. The water will serve me for two weeks. The water brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My house has a grass roof and it leaks during rains season. This has caused pneumonia to me. So lack of house is the current challenge I am facing.
