How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Poultry farming has been my passion, never the less it has been a source of income for my daily upkeep. My goal is to expand poultry farming to a large-scale one. This will attract more income and financial stability. I plan to realise this dream through the monthly upkeep of my husband who got employed recently.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly funds have empowered our people significantly. I achieved my dream of building a decent house for my family within a short time. Throughout my interaction, I have not heard of any irregularities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Living in a small house has been something that I was unhappy about. This is because I had a single house and cultural this was not right because we needed at least to separate the kitchen and the main house. It was an uphill task to construct the second house because of financial constraints. Therefore, we took the advantage of the unrestricted cash that we had received in building a decent house that is spacious. Hence, we used KES 55,000 transfer to accomplish this dream. We are so happy that finally our dream came true within a short time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 Pm when I heard my neighbors celebrating that they have received the money from GiveDirectly. When I checked my phone there was no message from GiveDirectly. I had to delete all the messages and within no time I got a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirecly. This was the happiest day of my life because I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. I informed my family members and everyone was so happy. I stayed for one week and then went to withdraw the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so expensive. I depend on the poultry-keeping project as my source of income. This project gives me a small income and I was not in a position to save due to recurrent household basic needs. I have always wanted to own a dairy cow but this was not possible. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew I would fulfill this dream. Currently, I have a dairy cow and I no longer buy milk like before. My children get enough milk and I am so happy. I save the money that I would have used to buy milk for other needs. GiveDirectly has improved our living standard. I will improve this dairy project and make it my main source of income. I will the surplus milk to earn an income for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35,000 on purchasing a dairy cow. This is because I used to buy milk daily and it was so costly. This was one of my main priorities since I wanted to cut the daily cost. Currently, I no longer buy milk and I save the money that I would have used for other household basic needs. I spent KES 10,000 on settling down the debt that we had borrowed. This was giving us sleepless nights because we were late in paying out. Currently, I have the peace of mind to do my work since I have paid out. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have two small children that have to drink milk and since I do not have a cow, I have to buy them milk for KES 45 daily. This is expensive for me because I do not have a stable job. Receiving this money will be a relief to me since I will be able to buy a dairy cow for milk. I have plans of building another house since the one that I have is the kitchen and the main house. The reason for constructing another house is because the smoke from the kitchen is not good for my six old month baby's health.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Our area has received steady rainfall for the past months and the farmers have harvested good produce. With increased production, the food prices have lowered and I can buy food without much struggle. This has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I always buy food daily for my family because we do not have a place to farm. This is quite costly because all the money that I get is spent on food and none is left for saving therefore it is the main challenge that I am facing now.
