How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Our new goal is to be able to raise enough money that will enable us pay school fees in time for our three children. We have two children in their secondary school level and oke who just joined college recently. We are alive to the fact that they require huge sums of money for their school fees and this is our main focus currently. We have always engaged in maize farming as a way of raising funds to meet such needs and we are so happy that our maize plantation is doing well so far. We have had rains since we planted the maize and we look forward to a very huge harvest that will see us pay their fee without much of struggle. We are so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that we got from them that enabled us accomplish other things that would have diverted our attention from this main goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did well in many areas but what stood out for me is the fact that we were given aid that we were not required to pay back at all. This was somewhat unbelievable for me and more importantly is that we were given the freedom to choose how to spend the money as long as those choices were good choices and acceptable by law. This was so commendable and I felt very much happy about it. On the other hand I did not find anything wrong with the way GiveDirectly and it's officers conducted themseves. Everything was just so seamless.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 12000 to buy a smartphone for one of my children who was joining campus and used another KES 23000 to pay school fees for our daughter who is doing her secondary school studies. We combiner the amount that remained with some money that we had obtained from selling maize that we had harvested and bought a heifer worth KES 20000. This was an investment that I purposed to do for it to be a constant reminder of the support that we received from GiveDirectly. It will also easily multiply and see us achieve our overall goal of paying school fees for our three children in time. The money came at a time when we were really pressed for money to pay school fees and we are grateful that we were able to get assistance with it.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was on Thursday morning when a message popped up on my phone Upon checking it was a message bearing the good news from Givedirectly confirming a receipt of our first transfer. We were so happy and thankful to both God and Givedirectly for the support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the completion of the house that had paused for a long period. We are now enjoying adequate space and a conducive environment together with my family members.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We had an ongoing construction of a two-roomed modern house but we had paused because of financial constraints. With an amount of KES 38,000, we used in completing the house we had started. The house is fully complete and we are soon going to move in. With the remaining amount of KES 16,000, I topped up an amount of KES 4,000 and bought a heifer worth KES 20,000 which is additional to my livesandwhich will provide us with adequate milk in the future.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I love poultry farming and I have desired to have a big poultry farm but this has not been possible due to lack of money. Currently, I have a few chickens however I have not designated a good place for them to live and sometimes they are eaten by eagles and affected by diseases. So when I heard about Give directly coming to my village I was filled with joy as I intend to use around KES 20000 for the construction and KES 10000 to purchase more hens and for the remaining amount I will purchase a dairy cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Givedirectly could not have come at a better time than this. When I heard that we were going to be the beneficiaries of this grant it brought joy and happiness into my life and I am now hopeful that my poultry house will be constructed and be able to purchase more hens thus reducing infectious diseases from my neighbor's hens.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge I am currently facing is a disease affecting my chickens. I do vaccination every three months however I have not been able to curb the problem. I presume it is because of lack of a proper house for them to restrain from coming in contact with unvaccinated hens from my neighbors. This has demotivated me since all my 20 hens died.
