How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had planned on repaying the KES 30,000 debts that I had borrowed to pay school fees for my children. My friend has kept on asking for the money. I feel relieved and I can concentrate on my businesses peacefully. I had also planned on starting some horticulture farming and that is a work in progress. I did not have a new goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving more to the people in the community to improve their living standards is what GiveDirectly does perfectly well. Most of the people have built better houses and started various income-generating activities. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 to repay the debt that I had borrowed from a friend to pay school fees for my son who is in University. This gave me peace of mind to do my daily activities without being stressed. I had always wished to do this but I did not have the money. I spent KES 10,000 to start a business selling second-hand clothes. This earns me an income to meet household basic items and even save some amount to pay the school fees for my children. I spent another KES 10,000 to rent a farm I am planning on doing some horticulture farming. I would be able to get enough food for the family and sell the surplus to earn an income to expand my business and save some amount for the school fees. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards to be much better than before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a few minutes past 6 pm and I was still at the market selling when one of the customers requested that she wanted to pay for the items she had bought via Mpesa. As I was checking if she had sent the right amount, I realized that my Mpesa balance was more than what I expected and I concluded that someone might have sent the money by mistake and would soon reverse them after reading the previous message indicating that I had received funds from Segovia technology. My children inquired if I had received the promised money from GiveDirectly in the evening as we were eating and after I showed them the Mpesa message, they confirmed to me that that is the name that GiveDirectly uses since other people had also received funds with the same name. It was at this time that my heart was filled with joy and I started praising God for these blessings.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have peace of mind because I have been able to achieve my goals of clearing paying for the piece of land that I bought two years ago and paying school fees for my son. I am glad that he has been able to resume his studies and is doing well in school. In addition, living a life where no one will threaten to take back what he had sold to you because you've not cleared paying for it makes me happy and I am grateful to GiveDirectly as all these would not have been possible had it not have been for them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When GiveDirectly came for enrollment, we sat down as a family and agreed on how we would spend the entire amount of our first transfer. Our major priority was to pay school fees for my son who had deferred his university studies for a year due to lack of school fees and to pay for a piece of land that I had bought two years ago. This is because its owner had threatened that he would sell it to someone else and after pleading with him, he agreed to give me a few months to settle this debt. Upon receiving our transfer, we spent KES 20000 on my son's school fees, KES 30000 to pay for this piece of land, and paid KES 5000 as tithe at church. I am a businesswoman going to different markets on different days to sell clothes as this is our only source of income. As a single mother of two, we had decided that I should concentrate on paying school fees for my son who is still in secondary school and meet our basic needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will start an income source by establishing a small poultry project. It is the only way I can earn through farming because my farm is too small for crop or animal production. I will spend about KES 20,000, I will buy a dairy cow at KES 30,000. I will also pay school fees with the remaining amount to return my son back to college. Since July, he has been staying at home because of lack of school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My greatest joy is when my son joined University at the begining of the year. I was excited to see him off to get his degree, a key to a better life. However, due to lack of income, he has deferred his courses, three months ago.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lacking a reliable source of income is the biggest challenge in my life. I used to earn an income through a tailoring business that I closed when my son joined a secondary school. Paying his school fees depleted my stock. Currently,I live by vending foodstuffs in the same town that I used to own a big business. I get about KES 100 per day, only enough to provide food for us. His college education is now another problem.
