How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any additional goals so far and I am thankful for what l already accomplished through the cash transfers. The main one was to own goats in my compound. I am positive that very soon they will increase in number and achieve a lot through them. I am planning to sell some and start up new projects like retail shops and hotels.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, this organization did a perfect job in ensuring that everyone gets enrolled and receive the money on time. There were no complaints at all and this was a result of fairness all along. Also, the officers made sure they educate us concerning the security of our cash transfers, and this reduced cases of theft or violence in the villages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on paying school fees for my two children who are in secondary schools (boarding) at a total of KES 24000. Being the main challenge I had to prioritize on it since they were also about to sit for their exams. In addition, I cleared a debt of KES 17000 to a friend in the nearby shop. I now have peace of mind because I was even worried that next time she will not be able to trust me whenever I undergo any hiccup. Apart from that, I bought a goat at KES 4500. I have been yearning to own them for such a long time but I couldn't afford it. With the remaining amount of money, I bought decent clothes and enough food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so happy and grateful the moment I received the money because it helped me meet my needs and address the challenges I was facing especially school fees arrears for children, livestock and new clothes because I used to wear and walk around with torn clothes. Therefore, I was so happy when I received the money from GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I was able to address and meet all my needs, especially school fees for my children, I got a goat that I had desired for so long and some new clothes to at least appear presentable like other people in our village. I no longer have to do the tiresome and tedious work of going to the forest to cut down trees and burn charcoal, which is a very huge relief. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer which was KES 13500, in which KES 6500 was to settle my daughter's school fees arrears and gave KES 7000 to my son who needed it for personal studies activities. I did that purely guided by my parental instincts because what gives me joy is to see my children happy and get what they need to make progress in their lives. My daughter is almost done with high school, which is so encouraging to me because that means after some time she will also be done with college and come back to help me because she will get to be employed and inturn I'll be able to count on her. I also spent KES 2500 on buying a goat because that is an investment that will live on and through it I'll always remember the assistance I received from GiveDirectly, and it will help me educate my children since it will multiply and increase in numbers which inturn I'll be able to sell one or two and pay for my children's school fees. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have desired to invest in livestock because it is the only way I can save my money to earn me a profit when I sell them after they multiply. I, therefore, intend to start with 10 goats that will cost me KES 30000 of my first transfer. The remaining amount of my first transfer will cater for food expenses and other household needs. With the second transfer, I intend to pay school fees for my 2 children who are in secondary school. This will give them the opportunity to settle in school and hence, a better performance.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day, waking up healthy with my children despite the life challenges gives me joy and hope for a better future .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial crisis is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. This has forced me to engage in charcoal work in order to earn an income to support my children's education. Considering my income that is very low of KES 3000 per month can not fully cater for their school fees as well as to sustain our other basic needs of the family like food.
