How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have if I never received money from GiveDirectly because I now have a decent spacious house which I built using my first transfer. I used to live in a small old house which was too squeezed. The floors had holes and the walls were almost falling down. I am now an owner of a beautiful iron roofed house which had always been my wish but lacked money of building one. My husband also managed to pay my dowry which had been an issue between him and my parents who had even threatened to take me back to live with them. Paying my dowry has gained my husband respect and honour from his inlaws.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly does well by exercising openness while carrying out their activities within the communities they work in. Unlike other programs giving aid to the poor, GiveDirectly is exceptional because the transfers are sent as promised to individuals through mobile money. In my opinion, there is nothing GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer to buy two local cows. One of the cows was used by my husband to pay my dowry and the other we are planning to keep to be giving us milk. This was the biggest step I made in life because my husband finally settled their misunderstandings with my parents who had even threatened to take me back arguing that my husband was irresponsible. I also used part of the money to pay school fees for my son who is in secondary school. He had fee arrears and was always being sent home to collect the balances while others were continuing with the learning. I am now assured that there will be no more disruption in his studies. Lastly, I spent part of the money to buy maize to consume in my house. I had a poor harvest from the previous season which could not sustain my family as we waited for the next harvest. I am now sure of food security in my house over the few months as we wait for the next harvest.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I face is lack of reliable source of income for both my husband and I. This is because we normally get odd jobs like farming twice a week which can not sustain our family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happiest at night as I no longer have to think of stressful events like lack of money.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will change my life and I will no longer live with the fear that my weak mud house might fall on my family at night, especially during heavy rainfall.
