How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it was before I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly in that, I now have a reliable source of income. It is the most amazing feeling ever. There is nothing better than having a fall back plan especially when you don't have a reliable source of income. I used my third transfer on buying a second-hand motorcycle and this has changed my life. I am able to take care of my needs and even save at least three thousand a week with the aim of buying a new motorcycle. I feel more goal-oriented and see life from a different perspective. I realized anyone can achieve their dreams as long as they have the necessary resources to establish themselves.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to attend a driving course. Some of the most successful people I know were once drives and I want to be like them. This has been my dream ever since I was young and I am determined to do everything to ensure I become one very soon. I will not think twice when I get the means to do the course. I have never attended any driving course, therefore, taking a new challenge like this one will be an achievement.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on purchasing a second-hand motorcycle. After doing enough research I realized that this was the most lucrative business. I really hope it will be successful because I have invested all my savings in this project. I spent the remaining amount on repairing the spoilt parts of the motorcycle. I decided to look for a permanent solution for unemployment because I used to depend on casual jobs especially construction work which was unreliable and very tiresome. I am now assured on getting a daily income without straining too much like I used to do when handling casual jobs. I also bought a few clothes. I now look decent and presentable. I really thank Give Directly for the changes I have made within a short period of time.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that, I was able to start a motorbike business. I was able to get the capital to begin purchase of a motorbike.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My additional goal is to begin a potato business where by I can supply potatoes here in Nairobi, directly from their farms. I also hope to move out of Mathare and to a different area.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfer to pay for a motorbike that I bought for transport business. I bought this motorbike as an investment that can boost my income. I cannot ride a motorbike myself, I have instead given this motorbike to an experienced rider who brings me a commission of 300 KES everyday. I took this motorbike on loan which I am required to make partial payments until I complete the payment. I am a pig farmer here in Mathare, and I also carry luggage for people at Garrissa Lodge market in Eastleigh, for some pay. I spent part of the transfers also to purchase two more pigs for my pig farm.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I am planning to quit the current casual jobs that I currently do for a living and open a boutique which I am sure will turn my life around because it is something that I have seen most of my friends do and succeed. This is also a less strenuous job that will give my body the much-needed rest it deserves after being in the hard-labour industry for such long time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I must admit that I am currently living a healthier life than before because I sleep much better and eat much healthier. Before I received the money, I was living in a terrible condition which caused me constant health problems due to excess cold and eating in untidy hotels because I could not make my own food due to lack of utensils.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money on a few household items which I lacked such as a bed, blankets, a table, utensils and a mattress. These were my main priority because I previously had no bed and slept on an old mattress on the floor with light tattered blankets which really made my nights very long because it was always cold. I also ate in the local hotels everyday as I had no utensils hence could not make my own meals, this came with constant health problems because the environments are usually not so hygienic. I sent some of the money to my siblings who mostly support me financially as a way of showing my gratitude for their help, then saved the rest for my future business plans.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
Even though GD had promised to send us money in November, I was still sceptical about the promise they had made because some other organizations had promised us such kind of help before but never delivered. When I saw the message, it was really hard to believe and I had to call up some of my group members to confirm if they had received the same messages to be really sure.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I would want to open a new business so that am able to stabilize myself financially so as never to lack. This existing business belongs to my sister and I would want to support it by adding stock so that she's able to enhance herself business wise.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern police harassment because they arrest young people anyhowly without valid reasons pulling up stands of mistaken identity leaving one to rot in jail wasting your time, when taken to court they say something you didn't do just to prove they are working. This is like a taboo in our localities and since Mathare has always been painted this bad picture even the courts would tent to side with them. I feel disappointed in my government as a whole it's as if Kenya has its own people.
What are your greatest ambitions?
I would want to get rid of poverty in my life and family by making both ends meet.. I'll give my best shot in my business am planing to open so that to be an icon in my community by employing most young people to do away with poverty which leads to crime. Most young men are shot dead in crime, this happens because they can't afford a meal on their tables, I wanna be a bridge to solving this.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
In my usual day which I treat it like my free time I go to train with my pals on acrobatics.. This is a group of young people that we came together so as to eradicate idleness within young people as we all know idle mind is the devil's workshop. Once RSS am done I usually go back home to watch TV have stories with my family to catch up how the week has been.
