How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the upcoming year and beyond, my goal is to successfully finish building a suitable home for my family, given that our present residence falls short of expectations. Although we had initiated construction previously, it was halted midway due to other pressing commitments. To materialize this dream, my plan involves utilizing the income generated from our printing business. While I acknowledge that it might be a gradual process, I hold onto my optimism and believe that I will eventually attain this objective.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
From my perspective, the support provided by GiveDirectly has deeply and positively influenced our standard of living, resulting in a significant transformation. The unrestricted approach of the program allowed us to allocate the funds based on our necessities without limitations. Moreover, the program was administered impartially and justly, void of any biases. I hold no reservations or worries about any facet of the program's implementation or credibility. The assistance we obtained played a pivotal role in enhancing our situation, and we are incredibly appreciative of the favorable changes it brought into our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Prior to obtaining my second transfer, our main focus was on finalizing the construction of our house to secure a comfortable living space. Regrettably, a change in priorities arose when we considered launching a printing business as a more immediate venture, with the intention of using its proceeds for the house project. As a result, the entire sum of $530 was invested in the business endeavor. This endeavor was challenging, particularly since my husband serves as a pastor and our family's livelihood depends on my agricultural efforts. Additionally, we have yet to be blessed with children. The assistance we've received has been a tremendous source of gratitude, as it has significantly improved our circumstances.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. That day, I was attending a meeting within my village and I had left my phone on silent mode in order to concentrate on that meeting. I heard people outside murmuring an indication that something was different with that particular day and time. I could not wait to see the meeting come to an end so that I could check my Mpesa. When we finally concluded the meeting, I confirmed and found out that indeed I had received a sum of $550 from GiveDirectly. I came back home and shared the good news with my husband who felt very happy to receive the money as well. The amount of joy and happiness in me was just immense. I felt very happy that we were finally going to accomplish our long time dream of building a better house for our family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving transfers is the houses that I have been able to put up. The money gave me a sigh of relief since I have always looked forward to the day we will be able to have enough money to put up such. Even though we are still a young family, my desire was to see our home better and yet we rely on little income to support our family. To me getting this money was a game changer in our lives. I feel so much happy to have been part of the beneficiaries of the program. I look forward to achieving much more even going forward.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the first transfer, I used $380 to purchase pieces of iron sheets that would help me in putting up our house. I then used another $50 to buy a tree that would help us make extra timber for building a house. The remaining amount of $100 was used to buy food, clothes and other needs of my family. I feel very happy that I now have all the building materials and the construction of both houses have since started. GiveDirectly has made this dream a reality something that I am so grateful for. We have not been able to do all these investments before because of the little income that we get from the works that we engage in. My husband works as a pastor and this minimizes the time that he has for his own work making it hard to have extra amount of money to make such investments.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My husband is a pastor at Gethsamane African Gospel Unity Church and we live in the church compound. We have bought a 0.2-acre piece of land in this village and I desire to build my house in that portion. This will give my household the status that is lacking now that we live in the church compound. I am a farmer with a 0.4-acre piece of land and this portion is small to accommodate any meaningful agricultural activity. Last year I harvested 1 sack of maize and I opted to use it for consumption rather than sell. That is why it has been impossible for us to build a house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Four months ago I had a 0.2-acre plantation of tomatoes which I sold for $200. I managed to buy a cow with the money and this made me very happy because I do not have to buy milk again.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
For the last 15 years, my husband has had an incurable case of ulcers which has always been a problem to us. To add salt to an injury I am also asthmatic with persistent attacks whenever it is cold. My worst month was in August when I was forced to stay indoors throughout because I could not withstand the cold weather then. According to the doctors, there is no end in sight for both cases and the much that can be done is to manage. At the moment we have no children and having no one to help us when we are both sick makes the situation even worse.
