How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Our new goal is to buy a plot of land and build rental houses. We want to do so because the area where we live is very dry and the crops do not usually do well. It is unproductive. Life is hence expensive since we have to buy most of the essential things such as food, water, firewood, etc. Other than buying the plot and constructing rental houses, we still have children in school and we have to struggle to get money for paying their school fees. We have a shop business. We usually borrow loans from a microfinance institution to pay school fees for our three children, two of who are in secondary school, and one who is in primary school. The money that we get from the shop business is what we usually use in repaying back the loan. We do not have the money to execute our new goal but if we manage to do so, the money that we will get from the rental houses will help us a lot with the children's school fees and meeting all our basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is perfect in the way they conduct their work and there is nothing wrong that I find that I would recommend them to improve. One thing that stood out the most in their work is that they are not biased at all in enrolling people in their program. All the people got an equal chance. I hence urge them to continue with the good work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the second transfer money on paying school fees for our two children who are in secondary school. We spent KES 40000 on doing so. The remaining amount of money, we used part of it in repaying the loan that we owe the microfinance institution, and the rest we re-invested in the shop business. We didn't have money and we owed the school a lot of money. The children were hence about to be sent home due to the arrears. The reason why this was so is because before, we had started a private school but we had to close it down due to mismanagement. As a result, there was a lot of money that we were owing the teachers and the hardware that supplied us with materials for constructing the classrooms. We hence used a lot of money settling their dues. So, when we got the transfer, we decided to clear the balances and pay for the next academic term. Our children have hence been able to study well without having worries that they going to be sent away from school. We are so much grateful to GiveDirectly for the great help that they offered us.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The happiness I had the moment I received the transfer was immeasurable as I knew that I would finally be able to achieve a lot of things. I was just opening my shop when I received a Mpesa message on my phone and after reading it, I called and informed my spouse about it and he was so excited. We're grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that transformed our lives and that of the people in my village positively and we pray that they keep on with the good work they're doing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before GiveDirectly came for enrollment, I had not cleared paying school fees for my children and also had a loan with a microfinance institution where I had taken it to start a business. Being able to clear school fee arrears for my children and pay part of the loan makes my life different as it was a load that was weighing me down financially. I am glad that my children will be able to concentrate on their studies since they will not be sent back home and I believe that their grades will improve and they will be able to join university.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 30000 to pay school fees for my children in secondary school. I settled on this so that they would not be sent back home due to fee arrears. In addition, I spent KES 15000 to buy some items for my business that I sell household provisions and clothes so that I would have all the things my customers usually ask for. I used the remaining KES 10000 to repay a loan that I had taken with microfinance when starting a school that later collapsed since few students enrolled. I am glad that I was able to achieve all these things within a short time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I work as a business lady and my husband as a teacher. Our two children are in high school where we pay a lot of school fees approximately a thousand dollars per year. These grants from Give Directly will stabilize my business hence more returns because I will have at least sixmonths to save what I would have used as school fees. I shall use $800 to pay my kids school fees for two terms. We had a established a private school within the community .This school performance was always good but due to Covid and the introduction of Competency Based Curriculum within the education system of the country the school collapsed. Most parents were unable to pay school fees hence the opted for public schools.we had borrowed a loan from Letshego financial firm and the loan is still outstanding.Although this money will not settle the whole debt at letshego, it will relieve me by a &300 amount and I am grateful.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of my day. When I succeed in my business and when I don't receive a call from the debtors I get happier .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The collapse of Elite Academy was and is still a great pain to me and my husband. We had invested a lot in this school in terms of the structures, stationaries, land including most of our time. We had a lot of expectations from it and we had never imagined a time when this school would be shut down completely. Reality hit us this year after Covid when the number of pupils who reported were too small. The amount of fees they paid were not enough to pay all the teachers as well as purchase food for these kids.Though painful to let go the one thing we valued in life we did it because it was a great loss to continue running the school.
