How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I love livestock keeping since it is more productive in our area as compared to crop farming. I used KES23500 to buy a cow and a goat to add to my herd. I am happy that I have an added assets that I will rely on in terms of milk production and offsprings. Looking at this bigger herd gives me the biggest difference in my daily life. I feel I have security to face any financial crisis arising in my family as well earning more through daily milk sales.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has greatly changed our society. We have been able to provide for our families effectively, purchasing livestock as assets and most importantly, building better iron-roofed houses thus enjoying good shelter. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Paulo Kipkirui Rotich, 20000 to buy a cow, 3500 to buy a goat, 20000 to settle an hospital bills I love livestock keeping since it is more productive in our area as compared to crop farming. I used KES23500 to buy a cow and a goat to add to my herd. I am happy that I have an added assets that I will rely on in terms of milk production and offsprings. I had a son who had been sick and we had a gone for medication with agreement to pay the bill later. Having gotten the transfer, I used KES20000 to settle the bill. Even though my son succumbed to the illness, I am happy that GiveDirectly gave a handy hand settling the bill.I used the remaining amount on my family basic needs; food clothing among other expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my family now lives in our newly built house comfortably. In addition to this, my visitors will always have shelter whenever they visit. At the same time, my family also have the privacy they need for themselves. Thanks to GiveDirectly for financing my long desired dream which used to seem impossible.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 o'clock in the morning when I had gone outside to relieve myself when I realized that I had an unread message on my phone since I was using it as a torch. Upon reading its contents, I realized that it was from GiveDirectly indicating that I had finally received the money they had promised us. My heart was filled with happiness as I knew that the money would help me achieve my dream of building a spacious house for my family.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to buy building materials such as timbers, nails, iron sheets and I also paid workers for this work of building my new beautiful spacious house for my family. I settled on this because the house we were living in was small and could not accommodate all family members. In addition to this, I used some amount to buy a pair of chair and a table since I did not have them. I decided on this so that people would have something to sit on. As a way of celebrating these blessings, I bought one sack of maize for my family's consumption, clothes and shoes for all my family members. I used the remaining amount of the transfer to buy farm inputs which majorly included bean and maize seeds and in hiring a tractor to help me till my farm in preparation to plant.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
First of all I am planning to buy a cow. From this I can get milk to sell and also calves to sell in the near future.I am also planning to buy more chicken so that we can start selling eggs and also chicken during market days. Finally I will build a house with the remaining part of the money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The first duty that I do in the morning is feeding my cattle. When my wife is done with the morning house chores, she releases me to go and do what I like doing most;this is repairing radios. This is the happiest part of my day since it is my passion which I just learned without persuing any course. It earns me some income to feed my family.I do this till late in the evening.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My first born son battled diabetes for more than 15 years. This was the biggest hardship and most challenging part of my life that I will never forget. It all started in 2002 until last year,April 2018 when he succumbed.Since 2002 he was in and out of hospital, sometimes even admitted upto 3 months. The medication was very expensive moreso because of the daily insulin injections.Given that I am a casual labourer it was a struggle that forced me to sell even my property such as livestock to pay the medical bills. At some point I even called for fundraising and assistance from politicians because I had nothing left.
