How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would like to open a grocery shop business. My husband has a farm and I plan to cultivate it this year, plant vegetables such as spinach, okra, and legumes, and sell them at the market.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The first meeting that was held was helpful, we were advised on how to guard the money and also how to use it wisely. They also helped us understand where the money was coming from. The meeting was informative.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The house roof has been leaking for the longest time, my children would get sick, and spend most of my money on medical expenses. I burn timber and sell charcoal and every week I get three sacks that I sell at $4. The money helps me buy food. Somedays when my husband does not make money, we do not eat dinner which makes me sad because that means that the children will wake up hungry and still not take breakfast before school which affects their studies. My husband rents a tuk-tuk, which he gives the owner $10 whenever he works and remains $5. This money helps pay school fees for my four children. Receiving this money has helped me install new iron sheets, paid school fees for my two children for $120, and food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy working on my farm weeding my crops. It was around 5 pm when I received the Mpesa message on my phone. I was very happy for receiving my transfer. I immediately call my husband to inform him about the good news. Because of the happiness that filled my heart, I had to close the day's work and join the rest of my family members in celebrating receiving the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my kids are learning without any interruption. This has restored the joy in my life. Previously, I was extremely bothered seeing the skipping classes because of lack of school fees. In addition, I am happy that I was able to boost my poultry farming something that will be able to caution me whenever I experience a financial emergency.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 to clear all the fee arrears for my son who is in form 3. This is because his education was constantly disrupted due to the huge fee balance something that bothered my heart. Currently, I am happy that he is learning without interruption. Similarly, I used KES 5,500 to clear the fees for the 3 kids who primary school and bought school uniforms for them since they were old and worn out uniforms. In addition, I bought solar panels on hire purchase where I paid KES 5000 and I intend to pay the others in 12 monthly installments. With the remaining amount, I bought 4 chickens for KES 2000 to boost my poultry farming a reliable source of income that will support the education of my kids in the future.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The wooden pillars of my house are in a very poor state. They have been consumed by termites. This has made the house very unstable. I feel insecure to live in it. I have the fear of it falling over me In case of strong winds. I intend to renovate the structure by constructing concrete pillars around it. This will cost around 35,000 KES. With the concrete pillars, the house will be strong to stand any form of wind gusts. Therefore, receiving this money means safety for me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have my son who did his form two examination and passed very well and he will be joining form 3 once the schools open. Him being my first child to be in high school, his positive progress is my source of happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Over-dependency is the current challenge I am facing. I have been a jobless housewife since I got married. My husband working as an auto-rickshaw driver provides everything for this household. This has seriously lowered my self-respect.
