How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the years ahead, my plans hinge on the rains. I aim to persist with tomato and maize farming, using savings from each harvest to fuel this dream. It brings me joy knowing that the income will not only sustain us but also fund my children's education. Rain or shine, this journey towards a brighter future for my family remains steadfast.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Thanks to GiveDirectly, my life has changed dramatically. My children are now able to attend school regularly, something I couldn't afford before. I've ventured into tomato farming and started a small poultry farm, providing a stable income for my family. The impact goes beyond just us - my village has seen development with new houses popping up everywhere. I like their current programs, I'm just filled with gratitude for the opportunities GiveDirectly has provided, transforming not just my life, but the entire community
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Thanks to GiveDirectly, my life has taken a positive urn. With the $450 I received, I invested wisely in my future. I used $250 to buy tomato seedlings and prepare half an acre of land for farming. Tomatoes thrive here, and they fetch a good price in the market. The income from selling them will sustain my farming and provide for my family. I spent $60 on food, relieving the food scarcity my kids and I faced before. Also, I bought a goat for $50, which will multiply and increase my assets over time. This support has transformed our lives, ensuring sustainability and prosperity for us."

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals; instead, I plan to focus on putting more effort into my farming activities. In the coming year and beyond, I aim to be more punctual in carrying out my farming tasks. I currently own an acre of land where I primarily cultivate maize for commercial purposes. The income generated from this farming venture has proven crucial in supporting my children's education and ensuring they receive a quality education. By being more timely in my farming activities, I anticipate increased production and higher income from the farm. This strategic approach aligns with my goal of providing the best possible education for my children and securing a stable future for them. I am optimistic about the positive impact this will have on our lives, as I believe that education is the key to success
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GD has done well, providing a substantial amount that I have never seen from any other organization. This has resulted in significant improvements in my community, impacting living standards, education, and agricultural investments. I am grateful that the transfer enabled me to support my daughters' education, bringing a sense of relief and assurance that their learning will not face disruptions. Thank you, GD.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The cash transfers have proven to be incredibly beneficial in supporting my efforts to finance the education of my two daughters, who are currently in secondary school. Before, paying their school fees was a significant challenge, given that my main source of income comes from small-scale maize farming. Additionally, my spouse contributes by operating a motorcycle taxi, but the earnings are limited, averaging around $8 per day, which is too little to cater for both our daily needs and education. I am genuinely delighted that $200 from the transfer allowed me to cover all the fees for this term. This has brought a sense of relief, knowing that my children's education will not face disruptions for the entire term, and I am hopeful that they will excel in their studies. The timing of the funds during the festive season also allowed me to allocate $80 to purchase new clothes for my six children. This not only adhered to our tradition of wearing new clothes during Christmas but also brought joy to their faces, unlike the previous Christmas when they wore old clothes due to financial constraints. Furthermore, I invested part of the transfer, $50, in upgrading my home's furnishings. I added two-seater sofas to replace an old, broken seat, enhancing the overall look and comfort of my house. The remaining amount was wisely utilized to buy food for my family, ensuring their immediate needs were met.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was overjoyed when I received my first payments from GiveDirectly about 3:00 p.m. I received a message, and after reading it, I felt confident that the receipt was correct. My children were at school at the time, and my husband was on his way to his taxi business, so I was unable to share the good news right away. I had to wait for him till that evening when he returned home, and he was equally pleased because he knew that most of the village members had received the money. We had everything planned out, and we could not rush to get it till a week later when we needed to spend it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Clearing my two children's school fees and allowing them to routinely attend their classes, including end-of-term exams, has made the largest difference in my daily life. It was a relief to clear their tuition, which allowed me to focus on other things other than seeking for their school payments.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My first and secondborn daughters are in secondary school, while my four younger children are in primary school. Paying their school tuition all at once has been difficult, especially given our reliance on small-scale farming and, at times, casual labor that is scarce. I also have 20 goats that I sell on occasion when things get rough and to meet some of the household necessities. I spent $200 on school fees for my children who stayed in school and took their end-of-semester exams with this first transfer. I also upgraded my home's furnishings by replacing the cushions on two three-seater sofas and purchasing three plastic chairs for a total of $53. My house is currently looking better and can comfortably accommodate all eight members of my family, with extra space for visitors. In addition, I spent $25 on pairs of school shoes for my five school-aged children, $20 for food staples such as sugar, beans, and cooking oil, and the remaining amount on toiletries and transportation to and from the shopping center. I am thankful to GiveDircetly for the changes I have made in my family and plan to accomplish much more with the remaining transfers.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I plan on putting more acreage of land under farming. With the onset of the rainy season, I can be able to double my income with the transfers. Lack of enough money, has limited me from doing large scale farming and I am happy because Givedirectly has given me a chance to do so. From the proceeds I can pay my children school fees comfortably and take care of other basic needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the past three years, drought ravaged our farms and we were unable to harvest but I am happy because this year was different. I planted maize under two acres of land from which I harvested 20 bags of maize which I sold. The money I got enabled me to repay the loan and pay for school fees for my six children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a stable source of income is a big constraint. I rely on farming in order to meet my family's basic needs but due to unpredictable weather patterns. Sometimes I lack enough money to put my children in school and as a resulted I borrow loans to make ends meet.
