How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After utilizing the second transfer, I opted to take a livestock investment line. Since I bought two cows using the second transfer, my aim is to buy more cows if I get some money. The reason of investing in livestock is because, they are secured sources of money. If need arises, selling an animal to sort it out is a quicker way. I am happy that the market price of livestock has increased in our area hence, the demand is very high.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am happy and grateful for what the organization did. The unconditional cash transfer program assisted so many people who were desperate in different areas. I could not save money on the amount of either buying two cows at once or a bed and a mattress simply because I was working from hand to mouth. I support GiveDirectly and its programs since they are all acceptable and welcome to the community because they are of goodwill.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, I decided to handle the plans I had, but I could not since the first transfer had so much to take care of. I first bought two cows for KES 24000.00. The aim of buying the cows is for investment purposes. Once they procreate, they will provide milk both for family consumption and for sale, depending on the quantity produced. Both ways would benefit my family. If it is family consumption, they will be healthy thus preventing themselves from sicknesses. If it is for sale, the family will have an income to be able to sustain themselves. I also bought a modern standard bed and a mattress for KES 7000.00 and KES 5500.00 respectively. I opted to do this because I desired to sleep in a comfortable place. Initially, I was using a traditional bed, which was uncomfortable. I would wake up tired as if I was doing some tiring work. As of now, I am happy and thankful to GiveDirectly because I sleep comfortably and enjoy my sleep.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I charged my phone and continue doing my daily chores. When I went back to check if it was fully charged I got a message indicating that I have received some money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately informed my spouse and we all celebrated the good news. It was one of the happiest evenings we have ever had. We knew we would be able to purchase heifers which were our priority. We went and withdraw the money the following day. We are grateful for this support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased two heifers. I had always wished to own dairy keeping project but it was not possible since I did not have the money. I always buy milk daily and it's so costly for me. I ran a small business retail shop and the small profit that I get are for meeting the basic needs of the family. Purchasing heifers has given me hope since I know that I will get enough milk for my family and cut the daily cost of buying milk. I will sell the extra milk to earn some income to pay school fees for my children. They will have a humble time studying and get better performance. Currently, I have devoted most of my time to this amazing dairy-keeping project. It has given me hope and straight to work hard. GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 on purchasing two heifers. I always buy daily and this is so costly for me. I would be able to get enough milk when it reproduces in the next few months. I spent KES 15,000 on purchasing materials and renovating the house. My house was not looking decent but currently, it is looking smart and I am so grateful for the support. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items. GiveDirectly has changed our living standard and we are happy.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I do a business of buying and selling livestock. I normally buy two cows at 12000 KES each. I will use my transfers to expand my business. I am planning to add increase the number of cows I buy by five. This will translates to more profits. The rest of the amount will be used to cater to other household needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There is one market day when I took my cows to market. We have nothing to eat at home because we had gone for days without finding a buyer. On that particular day, I was able to sell my cows promptly without any hustle. The buyer offer me a good price which I did not expect. I sold each of my two cows at 16000 KES instead of 15000 KES. This incident made me very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is my major challenge. I rely on livestock businesses for my survival. ( Buying and selling of cows). It takes about three weeks for me to find a potential buyer for my cows. I can only afford to purchase two cows costing around 12000 KES each. I do make a profit of 3000 KES on the sale of each cow. This amount is supposed to take us almost a month before we can buy and sell at the market. With the high cost of living, these proceeds hardly sustain us.
