How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is way too different at the moment than it would have been if I had never received the transfer. The great investment in livestock has always given me hope of prospering even more and more soon. I had been able to raise school fees at ease for my daughter which is not a usual occurrence not only in my household but also in the entire family. I am grateful to be part of this great project, and it is my prayer that other people who are still expecting the support may also receive their fair share so that we can move on together.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the great work happening in our village is attributed to GiveDirectly. Everyone is struggling to make it worth it as there had been no wastage at all. The basic knowledge GiveDirectly officers imparted on us before enrollment played a very great role as everyone got to learn that it was up to everyone to choose what to do with the transfer. This was the only opportunity given before the project is moved to the next village and no one could not wish to see it slipped off their hands. So far there are no is complaints which is a good sign enough to justify the fact that everything was well done.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a single mother, I had been living with my three children who have always given me hope of seeing another new day. They had been my motivation over the grocery businesses I had been running in the nearby market that have kept them in school, clothed, and also provided them their daily meal back home. On receiving the second transfer, I decided to spend $300 on obtaining a good breed of cow that is almost calving down at the moment. This will support me a great deal in raising school fees for the firstborn daughter who had just joined grade 9 in the nearby secondary school. I am glad that the school had been giving parents opportunities to pay school fees using both livestock and farm produce which in my case It will be of great help if I will get a chance to supply them with milk. With the remaining $200 I spent part of it on equipping my daughter with all the school requirements and the remaining on paying all her school fees as she joined.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the transfer when I was at the hospital taking care of my niece who had been admitted. Upon seeing the confirmation message, my heart was filled with joy. I knew that my prayers had finally been answered and I would be able to achieve a lot.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I no longer strain doing some casual work in our neighborhood like before. This is because I was able to buy enough food to last my family for some time. Due to this, I was able to start a small grocery business using the little money I had saved from my daily hustles.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 45000 to purchase a dairy cow and a heifer. Before receiving the transfers, I used to spend approximately KES 600 on milk monthly. Having my own dairy cow gives me hope that I will soon start saving the money I would otherwise use in buying milk. Also, the surplus from milk milk sales will enable me to meet some of our household needs in time while saving some. On the remaining amount, I bought some new clothes for my children and food to last for some time. I am now glad that my children will always wear decent clothes when going to church.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always yearned of buying my own piece of land since the 1 acre land I stay in with my three children belongs to my parents and Is too small for cultivation, thus $400 of my transfer will enable me achieve this dream. I will then use $350 to buy a friessian dairy cow, whose income from selling milk will support my daily earnings from casual jobs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Due to the remoteness of this area, securing casual jobs to do has always been my biggest daily worry. Whenever I manage to get one, my happiness comes in the evening after getting my wages for the day, which will enable me to feed my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
After the demise of my spouse 10 years ago, my inlaws asked me to retreat back to my parents since they could no longer afford to financially support my three children and I. I have been struggling to make ends meet since then. I do casual jobs in people's farms and earn at least $2 daily that enables me to buy food for my children whenever I manage to secure work to do. I am always worried on where to get such jobs since they are not readily available, which is the biggest hardship I face
