How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My daughter who was in a tailoring college completed her course after the second transfer had already been budgeted for. Concerning that, I set a goal of buying her a sewing machine to start a new business of her carrier choice. If I get some money, I will ensure that I buy a sewing machine since that is the priority as of now.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is a unique life-uplifting organization. I am saying that because when I received the first transfer, my school-going children were almost one month out of school due to school fees and lack of school uniforms. Through that transfer, I was able to buy them the school uniforms and also settle the school fees issue. As of now, they are doing well in school and this is because of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first thing I did was to buy two cows. The aim was to start raring livestock and preferably cows because they are more advantageous to keep than goats. The target was milk both for sale and family use, as well as selling if the need arises knowing that they have a high monetary value. In buying the cows I used KES 37000.00. I also bought some iron sheets with an aim of expanding my house by adding one room. This is because it was smaller to accommodate the frequent visitors whom I receive. Thereafter, I use the remaining amount in buying food for the family as well as clothing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy when I received my first transfer. It was late in the evening and I was just at home. At that, I was planning to cook meals for my children. Since the time I was enrolled in the program, I had been anticipating for the time that transfer would be sent. Realizing that fulfilment, I felt so glad and very appreciative to GiveDirecfly. For sure I had neither heard nor interacted with an NGO that is mindful of the least fortunate people like us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Currently, the biggest difference in my life is being able to meet the needs of my family members. I have been able to buy food as well buying new clothes for my household members with the transfer. This has given me peace of mind especially when I see my children satisfied and presentable in their newly bought clothes. Furthermore, I am in a position to support my children education without much struggle. Lastly, I am glad that currently I am living in a relatively bigger house after expanding the previous one.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfer to pay school fees equivalent to KES 15,000 for my children. Both of both are in tertiary colleges. Upon paying their fees, they have been able to continue with their studies. I also bought two goats at KES 2500 and now I own some livestock. Lastly, I spent KES 20,000 to buy some of the building materials which I used to expand my house. Currently, my house is big enough with an extra bedroom for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means continued education for my children. This I plan to achieve it through livestock rearing. I will spend KES 60000 to buy 20 goats. As the goats multiply, I will sell them at a profit and use the proceeds for school fees, uniforms, stationery, etc. The remaining amount of my transfers will cater for other family needs like food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month I receive the news about Give directly coming to your village. This made me happy because my dream of educating my children will be achieved.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial struggles are the challenges that I am currently facing. This is because I am doing charcoal work a job that earns me KES 600 weekly. Due to this, I have been struggling to provide for the basic needs of my family. Sometimes, I fail to put food on the table and I am forced to borrow from relatives, something that ashamed me a lot.
