How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I never received the transfer. This is because I have been able to build a spacious house for my family. Because of this, we now have privacy and I no longer live worrying where my children will sleep when the grow up. Also, I would not have been able to acquire an additional heifer had it not have been for the transfer. Through it, I will be having a source of income through the sale of surplus. This money will boost my financial stability and I will be able to cater for most of our needs without requesting for help from my spouse.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by uplifting the lives of everyone in a village they visit and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35000 from my transfer to purchase some building materials and paid the full cost of labor for the construction of a spacious house for my family. The house we used to live in was small and could not accommodate my growing family comfortably. Also, we had no privacy as parents as as we always slept with our children in the same room. In addition to this, I spent around KES 8000 on farming. I received the transfer during planting season and I was among the few people in our neighborhood who had not even started land preparation. Due to this, the transfer came in handy as it enabled me to hire a tractor for land preparation purposes, purchase some quality seeds and fertilizers. Using the remaining amount, I cleared school fees for my children who had been sent back home as I had not paid their school fees.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I heard message tone ring at around six in the morning while still asleep. On checkin it was GiveDirectly money and was very excited, I hurriedly woke up and prepared break fast. I then quickly took bath and headed to the nearest MoMo agent to withdraw the money. I was overwhelmed with joy all the way because everybody I met was extremely happy because we hadn't received such a lump sum before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is building a modern kitchen because the I had one was old and worn out.It was a shame when visitors came visiting because the kitchen walls would fall apart especially during rainy season and the grass-thatched roofs we're leaking. I had desired to build one for a long time but I was not able to but now I am very happy and grateful to GiveDirectly because the transfers came at a time when my kitchen was in a sorry state. Right now, I can comfortably welcome visitors because I also extended my single room. I am more confident walking on the road because I have bought decent clothing for my family and we are more neat than before. Availability of adequate food has also made my kids grow healthy and happy.Initially, we relied on casual labor hence would eat from hand to mouth but GD transfers have enabled me buy food in bulk. The transfers have also enabled me buy farm inputs and plant on time like other neighbors who are better off but this wasn't the case before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 200USD of my transfer on building a new Iron roofed modern kitchen which everyone is admiring it.This because the one I had, was old, worn out, had leaking grass thatched roof and the walls had fallen off and apart and could fall on us anyhowly and my kids were scared. Because of my security, I had to shift to my single room house which served like a kitchen and bedroom at the same time. I also 80USD on ten chicken layers because it's as a quick source of income to feed my family. I spent 40USD on purchase of latest clothes fashions because initially I would rely on second hand clothes for occasions. I also spent 40USD on a tractor for hire and four packets of maize seeds because initially it was hard to even get money to plough leave alone buying maize seeds. Before, I would depend on my maize meal , and vegetables business and merry go round monthly contribution in order to buy food, and farm inputs one by one until the required amount is attained.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy one dairy exotic cattle for $200 and another indigenous cattle for $150 so that as she grows and multiply, I can sell and pay for my three kids school fee. Additionally, I will use another $200 to renovate my house and also add an extra room so that I can have an ample space for privacy and my kids to use for their studies.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After I am done with my usual household chores, I head to my small arable land to cultivate maize, beans and kales. The happiest part of my day normally falls in the evening when I am back from the farm with some foodstuff for my family to take for supper. This is always a surety that my family will not sleep on an empty stomach.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever experienced in my life is provision of quality food to my family. I solely depend on subsistence farming of maize and beans in my small arable land. Due to persistent and prolonged drought in this area, growth of these plants have been greatly affected to an extend of sometimes having zero harvest. Due to low income I get from my casual labour, I have over depended on bought foodstuffs which are of similar variety hence not quality.
