How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals developed recently and I am thankful for those that I accomplished. The goats that I am currently keeping on my homestead are what I had desired to have the most. I am even planning to start up a business selling the offspring once they multiply. This will be the stable source of income that I will depend on at any time. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for making it a success.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job in almost all the regions. I am so grateful because my life has greatly been improved through the money I received. Initially, I could not afford the basic needs considering I was a widow. All is well now because I have assets that I have been desiring to have for years. I do not see any part GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying three goats at KES 9000. These are so far the only assets that I am relying on on in case of any financial crisis. I settled for them because they reproduce very fast and their pastures are readily available in my region. I also bought a new bed and a mattress at KES 10000. Initially, I was using the mats and some old clothes as a mattress. It was such an awful experience that I wouldn't which anyone go through. I also bought a water tank (200litres) at KES 3000. I now have a place to store water unlike before whereby I could use pots. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While preparing some breakfast for my children at around 9am, is when I received the transfer message in my phone from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed and danced in ululation since this was a big miracle for me. 1st, I hadn’t received such amount of money and secondly I knew the lack of fees and food problems in the family had been solved.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My peace was to see my grandchildren happy and full-time in their respective schools. Them being sent home for fees was something that was not giving me peace of mind. I appreciate the aid for GiveDirectly for enabling me to settle happily and in peace with my grandchildren in school. We also have food security where we get balanced meals everyday not like before when we used to go hungry for some days. I will never forget GiveDirectly; it is an organization that has no comparison.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing the money I took KES 15000.00 and paid school fees for my grand child who is in college so that he can concentrate in his studies. I also took KES 2000.00 and paid for my primary school grand children. Since our area has some hardship in sourcing for some water I opted to buy a water tank with a capacity of 1000 liters for KES 2000.00. I saved the remaining amount buying time for the climate to change so that I can purchase some goats. I decided to halt because it’s too dry and my grazing land is limited.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means food security for my family. The prolonged drought in my area has rendered my farm unproductive and only manage to harvest poor yields. Sometimes I have been forced to go without food the whole day something that has been depressing me. I am planning to use KES 80,000 from the GiveDirectly transfer to buy enough food for my family. I will use the balance to buy two indegenous dairy cows each at a cost of KES 15,000. The milk produced will be for domestic consumption and for sale.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been doing through a lot in life ranging from food insecurity and some prolonged illnesses. However, waking up in the morning alive and healthy makes me happy thus morning is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have been facing in my life is food insecurity. Drought in my area has been severe in such a manner that we don't harvest enough as we used to before. This has forced me to starve simply because I have nothing to cook. My health has also detoriated because of this.
