How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal was to buy chicken and start poutry farming and since this was achieved, my new goal is to look for market whereby I can start selling eggs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I can say my life has changed and I'm nolonger the same courtesy of GiveDirectly transfers. What GiveDirectly does well is changing people life by giving unconditional cash transfers to the world's most poorest.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a casual labourer and I have been looking for a reliable source of income for the longest time because casual jobs are seasonal. My dream has been to start poultry farming but the meager wages that I was earning averaging to KES 200 was not enough to save towards starting up. When I was enrolled in the program, my goal was to start poutry farming and this has been achieved because withe the recent transfers, I spent KES 22000 to by 30 chicken and KES 15000 to buy wiremesh which I used to construct a chicken house. I spend the balance to pay KES 5000 debt that I had, buy a goat worth KES 5000 and bought two sacks of maize worth 6000. In the next few months, I will be able to sell eggs and cater for some bills at home. I'm so grateful for the support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. I had gone for my causal job. I heard a ringtone message from my phone. When I checked it out I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I have never received such amount of money before. I immediately inform my family members and they were so happy. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. I withdrew the money the same day and planned on how to spend it with my family. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs in the village and small scale farming. The amount of money that I get through this is so small. I was not in a position to purchase all the basic household items and save some money to buy a dairy cow. I do not have a continuous source of income. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but it was not possible. My children would go without milk and this was so demoralizing. Currently I have a dairy cow and I get enough milk for the family. My children are so happy because they haven't missed milk. I save the money that I would have used to buy milk to spend on other basic household items. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own a dairy cow. I have devoted much of my time on this amazing dairy project and wished to expand in the future.

I spend the money I received from GiveDirectly on purchasing a dairy cow at the cost of KES 32,000. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. Currently my family get enough milk and I no longer stress up. I paid the debt that I had borrowed from my friend. This was giving me some pressure but now I feel so happy because I have paid all. Finally I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled us to live a better life.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Recieving this money means i will have a better home to stay and buy a motorcycle which I have always wanted to have.
I plan to use KES.60,000 to build a new house and spend KES.40,000 for a second hand motorcycle, the rest will buy stock of food for my family.
I have been working as a casual laborer in the village and I get paid on a daily basis, and it's hand to mouth routine. I have never progressed in terms of my personal developments.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy in evening when we have time to talk with my wife about the plans that we have and how we can go about them, my wife always encourages me that we continue to work hard for the betterment of our family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have a small house that have always interfered with my privacy, my children are growing and they need to have their own house, again when I have visitors, we look for a place to accommodate them since our house is not fit for them interms of space, this is a big embarrassments and shame in the community.
