How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The goal that I have is to support the education of my 4 kids who are about to join junior secondary next year. They will require a huge amount of money to keep them in school. To achieve this, I intend to start a grocery business where I would sell vegetables e.g. kale, tomatoes, eggplant as well as spinach around the village. I would use the income from this venture to pay for their school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly did well in conducting the village meetings. The training was so helpful since we got first-hand information about the program before being enrolled. In addition, everyone was included in the program discrimination. Lastly, we received the transfers at the right time as promised. I recommend they conduct more field visits after all the transfers to see how the cash has impacted the living conditions in the village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to purchase a car wash machine for my grandson that would assist him in his car washing business. I spent $251.50 of the recent transfers to purchase the machine for him. Previously, he had to stay without work due to the faulty machine he was using. Owning this will be a source of income for the family since it will support us whenever we face any challenge. In addition, I used $100 to support the education of my 4 children who are in primary by clearing their fee arrears for a whole year. I am very grateful that they are learning without any difficulties. Similarly, I bought new school uniforms for them since they were going to school with torn ones which were very embarrassing. Furthermore, I used $60 to purchase 2 Galla goats to improve the animal breeds. This is because Galla goats are quick to mature and more profitable than the local species. I saved the remaining amount to support me in case of any financial emergency that I might encounter in the future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As I was preparing myself for my daily hustles, I received a message on my phone. Upon checking, it was the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I felt so happily for getting some money at once, something that I had not imagined in my life. Happily I waken up my wife who was still on bed so that we could share the happiness of the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, I had no defined source of income, thus did some casual labor to earn a living. Currently, I am grateful that I have an income-generating activity of a car wash which I acquired after receiving the transfer. I am very thankful for the support I received from GiveDirectly because it helped me to settle on a project that is now generating some money which makes me survive
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I had already planned on how I was going to spend it. I took KES 32000.00 and started a new business of a car wash. I opted to do this business after doing a thorough research and realized that it would add value in my life. Thereafter, I used KES 15000.00 to buy some iron sheets. These iron sheets were for adding a room to my house to make it more spacious than the way it was. Since the time I received the one I had was smaller and congested.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Living a comfortable life with my family of 6 members has been my longing, but it has remained an unfulfilled dream up to date. This is due to the financial challenges which have denied me the opportunity to finish my house. We have been leaving a miserable life, especially during the rainy season. The house leaks and my wife is always stricken to seek shelter in our sibling's house for our children. This problem has not only affected the health of the kids because of the cold but also lowers my dignity as a parent. Receiving this money means building a comfortable home so that we can leave a free cold life. Other than that, I will invest the remaining amount in business which will be a source of income for our family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
December last year, I managed to receive 10,000 KES from my job. I was given a tender to prepare carpentry tools for a particular person. This happened as a miracle to me because the cash help me to celebrate the Christmas holiday well with my family. I purchased new clothes and buy food. This brought a lot of joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Prolonged drought is the biggest hardship I am currently facing. It has been 2 years since we received enough rain. Apart from my carpenter job, I am also a substance farmer. Farming has been providing food for my family before. Currently, I depend on Carpentry which earns me 300 KES which is not enough to cater to all our needs such as food.
