How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I am having my own house which I constructed from the transfers. It has been my desire for so long to construct one but I did not have the money to purchase the required materials. Therefore I was forced to stay in the small hut with my family. During the winter seasons, I used to seek shelter from relatives, and sometimes I felt embarrassed. I am now a happy mother because the house can fit all my family members and I no longer worry about the rains.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in various part but the most important one was the fact that money was unconditional. Everyone was given the opportunity to choose what to spend the money on. This made our plan and spend on what we have been longing to have. The enrollment was also fair and I did not hear any complaints from my village. I do not see any sector GD failed us.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent KES 11000 of my second transfer on paying school fees for my son who is in college. I then bought some nails at KES 400 for the completion of my house which I was initially constructing using the first transfers. I then bought a new bed and mattress to replace the traditional bed that I have been using for all those years. I also bought an ox plough for my pair of oxen that I had been rearing before. Previously I used to hire from friends which a bit costly. The remaining amount of money, I am using it in buying some enough foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My son had completed his primary school studies and ready to join high school. For sure, I feel happy seeing this transformation. I could not have raised the whole amount for his shopping and fees had it not been for financial support from GiveDirectly. As of now, he is comfortable in school, having paid the whole of this term's school fees. Additionally, I did adequate shopping for him which constituted all the requirements that were needed. To say the truth, I already feel that he is enjoying a good stay in school. Taking my son to school is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I woke up to a good atmosphere where the whole village was in celebration. I heard familiar voices of my friends saying that GiveDirectly had sent our transfer. I first thought that it was rumors spreading around. I did not waste any minute but grabbed my phone to confirm my curiosity. Indeed I could not believe that I had received my transfer. I was overwhelmed with joy and joined my friends in celebrating.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
My son had just completed his primary education and was to join high school. He needed shopping and school fees which were mandatory. When I received this transfer, I spent KES 25000 to buy stationeries as well as paying for this term's fee. I am now at peace as he has been enrolled and now I have enough time to prepare for the next payment. I haven't withdrawn the remaining amount of money. My plan is to spend it on buying goats that I will be keeping in my homestead and some pieces of iron sheet. Having a good shelter has been one of my priorities since for many years I have been living in an old weak house that has left me with worries, thinking that it might collapse anytime.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to facilitate my two sons' entry into secondary school. Each needs 44,000 shillings for fees and shopping. With the remaining balance, I will start laying foundation for a new house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest moment is in the evening when my husband comes home from doing casual jobs. I'm always assured of a meal then having skipped lunch for lack of it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Inadequate funds has been a big stumbling block to our progress. As a village elder, my husband does not earn any income and only depends on casual jobs to feed us. As school reopens this month, am frustrated because I cannot afford the 88,000 shillings required for my two sons who are supposed to be joining secondary school next week.
