How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Vegetable farming is the plan that is now being carried out. I've already made progress on repairing a water tap in the garden, but there are still other tasks to complete. Because rain has abandoned us in our location, I am trying to fix the water faucet so I may utilize it for irrigation. I thought that growing vegetables would be the best way to support my family because of the money I would gain from the sales. Since people travel long distances in quest of vegetables, I am positive about this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It was a good idea to send us money directly, as that was the method employed. I say this because it provided us the freedom to spend the money however our oppressive necessities dictated. There has been an open change in the advancements in our hamlet thanks to GiveDirectly's transfers. People used the money for a variety of initiatives that served their needs. Some built homes because they lived in hats, others developed businesses to support their families, and others bought livestock. I agree with the enrolling exercise, which by being conducted fairly and equally gave a positive image of the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have two biological children who are in primary school. In addition to that, I also take care of two nephews who are in secondary school and the reason why I take of them is that they are orphans. Upon getting the second transfer, I opted to pay their school fees because they were out of school for the same. Therefore I paid $190 for them and also paid $90 for my primary school children. After so doing, I felt relieved because their absence from school was depriving me of my peace of mind. Thereafter, I bought a goat for $35 and some foodstuff for $20. For the remaining amount, I did some piping for tap water at my shamba where I plan to start vegetable farming through irrigation due to the scarcity of rain in our area.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in my kitchen preparing supper for the family when I received an Mpesa message on the phone. At first, I could believe it so I had to share the news with the kids who were at home. After the confirmation of the account balance with my kids, it was true that I had received the transfer. I felt very happy and relieved after receiving my transfer. We jointly celebrated and thanked the Almighty God for the aid that would change our lives for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The irrigation activities that had started on my farm with the assistance of my transfer gives me confidence of a better future. I am very grateful that I would be able to achieve a lot when I start selling vegetables. The income for this activity will help me in educating my children without any problem. Therefore, being able to start crop farming is the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a businesslady running a shop at our nearby market center. I had desired to venture into crop farming an alternative source of income to supplement my earnings. After receiving the transfer, I used KES 40,000 to connect tap water to the firm where I am planning conduct irrigation farming. My intention is to growing vegetables, such as sukuma wiki, tomatoes and kales for sale. With this project, I anticipate to make huge profits since there is ready market due on high demand of vegetables. In addition, I used KES 8000 to clear school fees for my 2 kids who are in grade 3 and 2 at private school . Lastly, I used the remaining amount to purchase sufficient foodstuffs for the family since we have been experiencing famine in our area for over 1 years now.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I aspire to be called a landlady. The amount I earn will help me to be independent and not over rely on my spouse for financial support. My hope is to use the Givedirectly transfers to build two rental rooms. The amount will not be enough but I have plans to take a loan from my sacco to fill the deficit. From the two rooms, I expect about KES 4000 each per month for my personal needs and development.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December 2021, I got my yearly savings from our local sacco. It was KES 18000 which we saved over a period of 12 months, KES 350 per week. I was so elated because it enabled me to shop for Christmas without much hustle.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Insufficient finances is what I struggle with most. I rely on my husband who is the sole breadwinner for everything. 80% of his income goes towards education of my two children and three from my co-wife, leaving a small amount for food and other necessities. This has made it extremely difficult for me to pursue my own goals.
