How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal that I did not have before receiving the cash transfer which was to open a new business in a different location apart from the one I am currently operating. I believe by having the two business I will be able to timely meet all my daily need without struggling like before. I am therefore hopeful that is will achieve this objective very soon.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly is a unique organisation and this is evident from how it operates. The idea of giving out cash transfer has never happened in our lives and for some of it still feels like a dream. Currently 100% of my villagers have decent houses, livestock, business, and been able to send their children to school. I do not see any area that needs a change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on cleaning a medical bill of KES 20000 for my two years old son who has been ailing for sometime. He was diagnosed with stomach problem and I was so worried because the medication was too expensive. We have been experiencing some sleepless nights because of the pains he used to undergo. As a mother, this used to stress me a lot because I was even hopeless. The money came in good time and we was able to seek proper medication and we thank God there are some improvements. I also purchased more clothes for my business which coated KES 15000. All has been well now, the profits I have been earning has empowered me to meet all my family needs with ease. Finally with the remaining amount of money, I bought five goats that I am currently keeping in my compound. I am so happy that three of them have started reproducing which makes me believe that I will have many of them within a short period. Once they multiply, I am a planning to sell some and sort all my bills including school fees for my kids.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had just woken up at around 7 am when I decided to check my mobile phone which had been charging the whole night. After examining it, I noticed a strange message from Segovia technology indicating that I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. It was a very happy morning rejoicing for receiving my transfer which I had eagerly awaited since the day I was enrolled into the program. I was busy applying for birth certificates for my 3 children so I had to finalize them before planning on how to withdraw the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfer, I was able to meet my heart's desires of owning a piece of land as well as starting the construction of a small shop for my tailoring business. Previously, I was working at home where I did not get the chance to serve many customers. Hence, I was struggling to meet the basic need of the family, especially food and water. I am optimistic that my business will improve once I relocated to the market center something that will earn me more income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to purchase a piece of land at the nearby market Center, so that I may construct a small tailoring shop where I would be making dresses for my customers. This is because I had been working from my home after the shop that I rented was closed by the owner. Therefore, after receiving my transfer, I spent KES 15,000 to acquire the land. Similarly, I used KES 20,000 on buying building materials including 14 iron sheets, building poles, timber, and nails. I also paid KES 10,000 for the labor charge for the construction of a shop. Furthermore, I spent KES 2000 on applying for birth certificates for my 3 children that were required for their education. Moreover, I used KES 3000 to purchase 2 pairs of school uniforms for the children, they had been sent home since they lacked the right school uniforms.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a dignified life for me. This will be achieved through building a new house for my family. With my 2 years old son, we have living in a house that is in a very poor condition for the last 5 months. The house is weak and old. It is a mud constructed house. The mud is now detaching from the poles, leaving the house with so many holes. This leaves us feel very in insecure staying in this house. There is no privacy and there is a likelihood of the house falling. I am planning to use 30,000 KES to build myself a decent house. The new house will be a source of security, dignity and privacy for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am tailor, four months ago, I acquired my own sewing machine that I bought with my own money. This was the peak of my happiness in the last 6 months. Owning a sewing machine gives me hope of being self independent.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity and water scarcity are the challenges I am currently facing. I am currently involved in charcoal burning. I approximately make 4,000 KES per month. With the water scarcity problem, I spend half of my income on fetching water. A 20l container goes for 50 KES. The amount that remains is insufficient to buy food that can comfortably last us( my son and I) for a month. This forces us to reduce the number of meals we take in a day. In the last one month, I have been taking two meals per day ( breakfast and lunch or breakfast and supper).
