How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
One of my most important goals is to ensure that all my children who have completed their secondary school education get the opportunity to further their studies. It brings me great joy to see them succeed and pursue their dreams. I am determined to raise the necessary funds for their college education without struggling, as I believe education is a valuable investment in their future. With two of my children ready to embark on their college journey, my focus is on paving the way for one of them to join college this September. As I continue to manage the tomato farming business, I have ambitious plans to expand it further. Currently operating on one acre, I envision maximizing the revenue by expanding to either 2 or 3 acres. This expansion will allow me to increase production and meet the growing demand for tomatoes. I am grateful for the success I have achieved so far in tomato farming, and I am eager to take it to the next level with God's blessings and hard work. I aim to create a thriving and sustainable business that not only benefits my family but also contributes to the community's prosperity. As I strive to achieve these goals, I remain grateful for the support I have received from GiveDirectly, which have played a crucial role in empowering me to pursue my dreams and provide for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The impact of the GiveDirectly transfers on us is truly remarkable, and I cannot express my gratitude enough. When my husband fell ill, affording his medications became a constant struggle. But the moment we received the GiveDirectly transfers, they bridged that gap, and my husband's health improved significantly. Now, we stand together, supporting each other in household responsibilities, especially when it comes to finances. The unexpected boost from GiveDirectly also enabled me to lease an acre of land for tomato farming, something I had never imagined doing before. This newfound financial support instilled confidence in me, and I took the leap to farming with hope and determination. The impact of GiveDirectly's assistance will forever hold a special place in our hearts, reminding us of the strength that can be found in times of support and care.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfers from GiveDirectly, I wasted no time and immediately invested $450 in purchasing fertilizers for my farm. To streamline the process, I sent the money directly to the company selling the fertilizers, and they promptly delivered the much-needed items to my doorstep. My farm was now ready for use, and I had ambitious plans for tomato farming, even though I had never tried it before. I decided to opt for tomato farming instead of the less profitable Kenya seed maize planting. It was a risk, but I believed it had the potential for better returns. With $1500 invested in the farm, I nurtured the tomato plants with care and dedication. The tomatoes flourished, and the harvest exceeded my expectations. In the end, my investment of $1500 yielded a remarkable $3000 in returns. The successful harvest brought in a good revenue, which proved to be a turning point for me during that challenging period. The substantial income from the tomato farming allowed me to settle all the bills that had been weighing on my shoulders. The financial burden that had been hanging over me was lifted, and I felt a newfound sense of security and accomplishment. Taking that leap of faith into tomato farming and utilizing the support from GiveDirectly was a transformative experience.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goals is to have my own farm where I will be growing tomatoes and selling them to my neighbours who will buy it on profit. The money that I get after the sell of my products, I will save enough to build my self and family a new house. The current one that we are living in is not that spacious enough for my children and I. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for it all.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am grateful for the help that I received from GiveDirectly. They promised that they will send money to us and they fulfilled it and the information we were given were clear and got to understand it well. There was no complain from any member of the village and I also did not see any negative thing that they GiveDirectly did.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer from GiveDirectly, I was happy that I was able to pay my child's school fee which did cost $100 and did some shopping. In addition to that I paid $100 for my husband on his treatment since he was unwell, I spent the remaining amount to buy foodstuff and other household goods to support my family and children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received my first transfer around 4:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, informed by a message notification that I could not understand at first after reading through it. I received three phone calls from close friends who had received the same transfer and had already confirmed the message's authenticity. I was at my farm at the time and had to return home to tell my husband, who was overjoyed. We were unable to collect the funds on the same day, but transferred some to pay a portion of my children's school bills before withdrawing the remainder the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the hope of seeing my husband recover and be free of the pain he has been experiencing. The treatment he is currently receiving has been effective, and it has given us renewed hope for his health. I am grateful for GiveDirectly's financial assistance and hope to see more changes as my husband continues to receive his medication.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I sent $30 to my two boarding secondary school sons traveling home after their schools closed on the first transfer. The next day, I collected the remaining funds and gave a portion of them to my husband, who needed to see a doctor because he was not feeling well. He has a growth on his back that has been gradually growing since he was unable to afford treatment. His doctor confirmed that it was a malignant growth that he suspected was a tumor during his first visit. Despite the fact that he was charged $80 for the consultation and some medication he brought with him, he has so far visited the same hospital, and they chose to prescribe him herbal medication that causes the tumor to grow faster and then burst. Every visit costs him $80, and we have had to sell some of the properties we had to meet the cost. I am relieved that his condition has improved and remain optimistic that he will recover soon. I later used the remainder to buy food for my family of eight, which we still use today.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Living as an Internally displaced person for the past eight years has not been easy. In 2014, we were displaced by floods from Lake Bogoria. Unfortunately, we lost everything and we have been hosted since then in a neighbouring village. We are not stable because we cannot farm freely in the land that we borrowed. I desire to own a piece land where we can build a permanent house for my family of nine. This has not been possible for a lack of stable income as the KES 6000 I get from selling two goats every month is hardly enough to cater to medication for my ailing husband, school fees for my five school going children and food. I am more than happy because receiving this transfer would mean betterment of life and good living conditions. I plan on using the money to buy half-acre land and the rest will go into clearing school fees in arrears of KES 60,000 for my children. We are delighted as this transfers is Godsent and it will change our lives.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiness of every parent is to see their children thriving in life. When my two sons joined final year of secondary education six months ago, and I am thankful to God. I believe that they will pass their exams well and proceed to University so as to pursue the careers they have always dreamt of. I am proud of them because I know their future will be better with good education.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When my husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness five years ago, life took a different turn. We were all happy and leading our normal lives until 2017 when his health started deteriorating. He has been in and out of hospital and this has greatly affected our finances. As the sole breadwinner, I depend on farming to earn a living for the family. Unfortunately, it is seasonal and we are not able to meet all the medication bills. For the past two months he has skipped his clinic appointments and medication due to lack of money. We are hopeful and continue looking into the future since we do not know what it may bring.
