When I was unable to proceed with my college studies for a lack of school fees, I resorted to livestock farming. Lack of enough capital has limited me from diversifying my investment. Currently, I rely on goats rearing to be able to meet the basic needs of my family like school fees and food. Since it is seasonal, it is not enough to save for future use. The transfers from Give directly will fulfil my desire to start poultry farming. There is a readily available market for eggs and chicken meat in this area. This will cost me $700 to build a shelter, labour, and purchase chicken and feeds. I project on earning $ 100 monthly and I am grateful for it will change my family life for the better because we will have a stable source of income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For six years now, the swelling of Lake Bogoria has brought instability to this area. Apart from displacing households, breeding grounds for mosquitoes and tsetse flies, and impassable roads it also limits pasture for livestock from growing. We are delighted that three months ago, the water levels went down and we can comfortably move around at the same time have enough feeds for our livestock. This has brought happiness to us.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We live in a semi- arid area and the last time we had good harvests from our farms is three years ago. We depend on causal jobs and raising livestock to earn a living but since it is seasonal, we are forced to take one or two meals on a fortunate day.Food insecurity becomes a challenge especially with the scarcity of water in Baringo. To get clean water, we walk for five kilometres to access a water pan. This is very difficult, particularly for women and children. If we had a sustainable source of water our lives would have been different compared to now.
