How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My dream has always been to expand my business. To be able to have a larger flow of income would mean the world to me and my family. This would allow me to be able to build a 6-bedroom house as well as some shops to rent out.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has excelled at giving us a chance to fulfill our dreams. The impact they have had on our lives is immense and we are eternally greatly and pray they continue to bless others
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have never been more thankful to anyone than when GiveDirectly sent me the funds, allowing me to buy food and ensure my family stays afloat. I used part of the funds to boost my grocery business as well. With it based at Ganze Market, I was able to make sure I had enough bales of flour, cereals, and a couple of fruits to ensure I was fully prepared for anything a client may need. While my husband earns $5 doing casual labor jobs, it is impossible for that to support us financially. The six kids we share go to school and need fees amounting to, $520 for the form 4 one in Malindi High, the form 3 student is in Doctor Aggrey school and commands $60 at the Taita Taveta School while the youngest is in class 8 at Ganze Primary and requires $2 month. If GiveDirectly had not stepped in, we would never have been able to accomplish all we did.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I preparing to go to my daily hustle at around 9 in the morning when I noticed that there were two unread messages on my mobile phone. I was so nervous and decided to check who had sent the text at that particular moment. I was so happy and supposed to learn that they are from GiveDirectly informing me that I had received my first cash transfer. I even cancelled out the plans for the day and focused on the plan of how best I would utilize the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers, I managed to clear the huge fees arrears for my two children who are both in secondary schools. Paying their fees has always been my main challenge because my spouse and I rely on a hotel business which is not lucrative at all. Most of the time we used to experience loss since we have been the capital to cater to some other basic needs in our household. Therefore this has been affecting my kid's education journey considering that I no longer received government bursaries like before. I was even worried that they may not be able to graduate since they were in their final years. I feel relieved and grateful because they will study without any disturbances which is an assurance of good results and hence a brighter future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first cash transfer on paying school fees of KES 40000 for my two children who are in secondary schools. I was so stressed because they are both in their final year and I was worried that they might be forced to repeat. I am so grateful to God for this making this happen since they will soon graduate. Additionally, I managed to renovate my stall which was leaking terribly. With the remaining amount of money, I have been buying foodstuffs for my family and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means quality education for my children. I have a small business of selling cow trotters at Ganze center making 500 KES per day. Having a family of 7 people, a huge percentage of this money goes into domestic needs ( food & health care). This leaves me struggling to pay school fees for my children. To ensure my sons get good education, I am planning to expand my business by building a bigger structure and start selling more foods such as pilau and chapati. The expansion will cost approximately 30,000 KES. Hopefully, I will be making 500 KES extra. This amount will help me comfortably pay the tuition fees in time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There was a recruitment exercise for the Kenya Police on 24th March. My third born, Hussein, was very lucky to be recruited. As a mother, I was very proud of him. He is on his journey to be part of the team that protects the country.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have 3 sons who are still in school. Paying their school fees has been challenging for me. I have a small business, selling cow trotters in the village. This occupation earns me 500 KES per day. Considering other family needs such as food, health care, this amount remains so little to support my children's education.
