How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I got enough space to carry out farming. I do depend on farming to take my children to school and meet my daily needs. The main challenge which I had was limited space, but now things are so different. Since I acquired a new piece of land, I fenced around my homestead with a chain-link wire and practice poultry farming. The other portion, I am using the other portion to rear dairy cows.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly gave us the money as promised earlier and most importantly there were no conditions on what to spend on. This enabled most of us to plan for it and spend on what we saw it was fit for us. On what Give Directly didn't do well, I can boldly say there was none. The enrolment was transparent and that they deliver their promise.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Before I started receiving transfers from Give Directly, I had always desired to purchase a piece of land where we would do farming. I had made some savings but wasn't enough to a reasonable size of land. When I got my first transfers, I had bought a cow which I then sold it making a profit of KES 2000 on top of what I had spent on buying the cow. I then put together my savings, the money which I had received from selling the cow and the whole of my second transfers and spent the whole amount to purchase a piece of land. Now we have adequate space to carry out dairy farming and crop farming. The small piece which we inherited from our parents shall be used to grow fodder crops for the livestock and also grow some food crops. I am happy that Give Directly made my dream come to pass.
