How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My utmost desire is to secure enough funds to provide a quality education for my children. I believe that investing in their education is the key to shaping them into responsible and capable individuals who will positively impact society in the future. My dream is to see them excel academically and grow into compassionate and successful adults. By receiving a proper education, they will have the tools to uplift our family and help me in our journey towards a better life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Through the unconditional cash transfer, I was able to fulfill my deepest desire to send my children to school. Their support lifted the financial burden that had been holding us back for so long, and now my children are receiving a quality education without any interruptions. Witnessing their enthusiasm for learning fills my heart with pride and hope for their bright future. Therefore, in my opinion, the organization should keep up the good work they have been doing even as they move out of our village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
One of my top priorities was securing my children's education, and I used $150 to pay for one of my sons in high school fees for the entire year. This ensured he could focus on his studies without the burden of worrying about fees. Additionally, I paid $40 for my other four children's primary school tuition fees, ensuring they too could continue their education uninterrupted. Education was the key to a better future, and I was determined to provide this opportunity for my children despite our financial struggles. Understanding the importance of skills and vocational training, I enrolled my elder son in a driving course that cost $180 for six months. This decision was an investment in his future employability and self-reliance. I had faith that he would gain valuable skills and experiences that could open up new opportunities for him. Moreover, I repaired a motorcycle that had been our family's sole source of income. As jobless parents, my spouse and I heavily relied on the financial contributions of our children. By fixing the motorcycle, we aimed to revitalize our income source, allowing us to provide for our family of nine more independently.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I still clearly recall the moment my daughter-in-law informed me that I had finally gotten my first transfers as I was watering the flowers at my farm. There were a variety of feelings at that time because it seemed like a dream. In my excitement, I forgot to remember the duty I was handling and hastened back home. I shared the good news with my family, who could as well not hold their joy. I knew that my kids would finally return to school after missing classes for almost three weeks due to the arrears.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being jobless has brought back all the challenges that I have been through for twenty years. One being that I have always delayed paying fees for my four children, who are in grades three, five, and six, respectively. Therefore, they have been in school for some countable days since the beginning of this year. This has dragged them behind academically, which I thought they would eventually drop out of. As a mother, I have felt the pain of seeing them miss classes regularly, which has been the worst experience. My spouse, who relied on odd jobs( earning $2 a day), could hardly cover all the family's basic needs. Getting the daily meal was sometimes not easy, let alone the school fees. I am now thankful to GiveDirectly for coming into my life at the time that I needed their aid, because if it were not for them, my children would still be at home with this rising cost of living. I am convinced that their future will be greener, hence eradicating poverty levels.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My four children have been in and out of school for quite some time due to the arrears, which used to stress me a lot. Therefore, I spent $160 of my first transfer on paying fees so that they could resume their studies. As a parent, I have also been wishing for them to have a smooth learning experience in order to accomplish their educational goals. This is the only assurance of their success in the future. My spouse has been the one responsible for making ends meet, and he could hardly afford to meet all the basic needs, especially paying the fees on time. For now, I can't hold my joy after finally being able to clear the whole amount at once, which shall continue for the whole academic year. This is an inspiration to them, and I am certain that their performance will improve. Apart from that, I opted to purchase ironsheets for the renovation of my two-room house, whose roof was badly smashed. As a result, some of my possessions, like furniture, were destroyed, which was another disaster. I had to move to my brother's house while I waited to repair mine. I am now at peace about finally being able to renovate my house, which has also restored our happiness as a family. I have been buying food for the nine family members with the remaining cash. My children are now healthier and stronger, unlike before, when they could not even perform any task due to extreme hunger.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Education for my children and repairing my house are top of my priorities once I receive this money. Currently, my children's education is affected by the lack of school fees and this has worried me a lot because their performances have drastically gone down. With this money, I intend to clear all their arrears including paying their current fees using the entire first transfer ($550). This will guarantee them time in school to boost their performances. On the other hand, I will use the remaining amount to repair my house whose roof is currently not in good condition. Also, I will buy some new beddings for my children because their current ones are rugged and do not give them a better sleep. Therefore, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In our area, sometimes could get so dry, and getting clean water will mean walking long distances like 7 kilometers to get one 20-liter jerrican. This is so tiresome and time-wasting, which also drains much of my energy. In August 2022, my son bought a secondhand motorbike for his father which has been so supportive of me. I am no longer walking all the distances to fetch water, rather my husband does it for me using the motorbike. This has directly helped in improving my health status since I have ample time to relax and hence, I consider this as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The impact of corona pandemic is still felt in my household because my husband's casual work has never been stable again. Since he works as a masonry within the village where most people are yet to recover from the effect of this pandemic, it's hard to find people constructing new houses. This has forced us to be selling our goats to support our children's education as well as other basic needs like food. At the moment, we have finished our stock and this means our children lack school fees, a situation that has affected their studies. Currently, I have 2 pupils in high school but what stresses me most is where to get their fees because even the bursaries are not reliable. I, therefore, consider financial crisis as what stands out as my biggest challenge.
