What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent most of the money on buying cows that were sold to me at approximately Kes 30000. I also bought a new school uniform for my kids who were used to wearing torn clothes. Apart from that, I also made sure that their school fees balances were cleared in good time. I had to make sure that I use the money appropriately so I decided to build a new house for my family and I also went ahead to build a new house for the kids because they needed to have some privacy. had a house of their own.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The organization helped the community members to changes their lives, myself included because, for one, I was able to build a new house which I never thought I would ever own in my life given my economic status.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has transformed because of the new house that I already built using the transfers that I got from the organization. My kids are also able to go to school unlike before when they could spend months and months just staying at home because we lacked money to pay. Apart

What did you spend your first transfer on?
When I received my first transfer, I strived to fulfil what had been my biggest desire, which was to buy and own a pair of oxen that I have begun using to cultivate my pieces of land. For a long time, I have been hiring from my neighbours and it was costly to me. I could not also manage to till a large tract of my land because I was mainly using a hoe which is not effective for a large piece of land. I am hoping that through my oxen, I will be cultivating large tracts of land and I will have abundant harvests for feeding my family. I also spent this transfer on buying iron sheets and other building materials for building a new house. The one I was living in previously was in a bad state and was a threat to my own life since it was nearly collapsing. Taking shelter in it was risky, however, I had to continue staying in it because I had nowhere I could seek shelter. Thanks to GiveDirectly for the financial help which has helped me start building a new house which will be ready for use in a few days to come. Lastly, I paid a small portion of my transfer for my children's school fees so that they can continue with their studies without any disruption.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a message notification on my phone very early in the morning as I was up for my daily chores. On checking to confirm, it was a Mpesa notification from GiveDirectly indicating that I had received my first transfer. I was very happy to have received such a huge sum of money on my phone. I knelt down and thanked God because I knew that for sure the transfer would enable me to meet my expectations that I thought I would not meet due to financial hardship I was passing through.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a pair of oxen that I had never imagined I could own in my life. I had lived in constant lack of money thus buying even personal property was not easy. However, the transfer from GiveDirectly has enabled me to acquire the oxen and through them, I will be able to till a large acreage of land to increase my food production. To me, owning this pair of oxen is the biggest difference in my daily life.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food security for my family members remains my biggest worry as a peasant farmer who depends on rain for farming. The rainfall has lately become unreliable leading to drought and the pesticides are exorbitant. To cover up for drought, I sometimes resort to charcoal burning which takes days before earning some income. As such, my family is forced to skip lunch or breakfast which again is a recipe for malnutrition diseases such as kwashiorkor to my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My normal day starts at 7:00am when I set out to herd my goats. I take a break in the afternoon and resume later in the evening. Herding makes me so happy knowing that am taking care of my assets which will produce and increase in value with time.Because crop farming is not doing well lately,I spend better part of my day herding the goats.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
For a very long time I have had the desire to start my own business of goats trade. But due to lack of capital, I have been unable to.Receiving this money therefore means I will realise my dream of starting up goats trade business. It's easier and cheaper to buy goats in our area and resell to make a minimum of 50% profit. This will in turn help me pay school fees for my two children in secondary school and ensure that we have enough food in the house always. It's such a lucrative business and I can't wait to start with the money from Givedirectly.
