How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I feel like I have achieved all the goals that I had set and I just need to concentrate on looking for money to replace the old battery for my motor taxi which is not working so that I can get back to business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I love how the whole enrollment process was free and fair and how the sensitization was done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before COVID-19, I used to operate a motor taxi in the city and I used to earn some good income to support my family. Due to COVID-19 crisis, I had to go back to my rural home where I started doing manual jobs in the farms and construction sites to provide for my family. It was not easy because the jobs were not reliable and the wages were very low but my target was to get at least one meal per day for my family. Since I wasn't operating the motor taxi, the engine and some parts broke down and I needed a lot of money to replace the spare parts but I couldn't afford raise it because of the low wages. I spend part of my first transfer and all my second transfer to repair the motor taxi and I only need to replace the battery for it to be fully functional. I'm hopeful that in a months time, I will have managed to buy the battery and I will be back to business and at least earn some good money to take good care of my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
For about two years, my main aim in life has been to expand my phone repair business which has been performing poorly due lack of funds for buying new phone accessories. So when I received my transfer from GiveDirectly, I felt so happy because deep inside me, I knew that my business would definitely be revived. I noticed the receipt of transfer at about 10am. At that moment, I was just at home and in the company of my village friends. Being driven with my aspiration to have a successful phone repair business, I became restless. Therefore, I decided to forsake the company I was in so that I could go to Kilifi town and purchase some phone accessories in order to ensure that my business was running. For sure, GiveDirectly's transfer is the best gift I have ever received in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is having a steadfast source of income from my phone repair business. Currently, my daily income from the business profits ranges from KES 500 to KES 1,000. I therefore find it very easy to support my family in terms of buying food and paying school fees. In addition, from the business profits, I have begun rebuilding a permanent two bedroom house. Previously, I could not do any personal project because I was always constraint financially. I am so glad because as a result of GiveDirectly's transfer, my life has changed for better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfer on buying phone accessories costing KES 25,000 to help in boosting my electronic shop. In addition, I bought a battery and an inverter at KES 6,000. As a result, my business has in the past one month registered good performance. Every single day I always realize a net profit of at least KES 500 from my business of repairing phones as well as selling phone accessories. In addition, I bought a cow at KES 15,000 from which I look forward to obtain milk for free for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I need to finish building my house because it is uncompleted.I need 20,000 KES very urgently to purchase phone spare parts and tools for phone repair business. I am a mobile phones technician and this is the business I have been doing for 6 years in partnership with my friend. I entered in partnership because I have the skills but I do not have tools to run the business . However, the business came to closure because of covid 19 effects but I am seeing the need to open it because I used to make 2000 KES a day and my life was much better than now .Receiving this money means I will purchase the phones spare parts and tools so that I run the business alone. Meaning I will be getting much profit than before.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I got a relief food here at our town from the county government . I got 9 kilograms of rice and 4 kilograms of beans. It brought happiness and joy to me because it relieved me the burden of hunger for a month.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Finance and hunger is my biggest challenge. I closed my phone repair business because of covid 19 after my partner decided to run away with his tools , leaving me unable to operate the business. I am expiriencing food insecurity in my house, a problem which made me and my wife to separate . I am just surviving from daily casual labour in order to put a daily meal on the table.
