How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have desired to start a shop business in my life. This will ensure that I have constant income that would help me meet some of my daily basic needs like food. I am planning to rent a shop at the nearby market to start the business once I got money. The aim is to sell products like maize flour, sugar, salt and soap detergents. Therefore, starting a shop business is the new goal that I have at the moment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in visiting every household and giving them the right to participate in the program without discrimination or favor. Furthermore, it was vulnerary to be included in the program we were not forced to be enrolled. I do not see anything that the organization did not do well since the transfers were very supportive of many poor households.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the most recent transfers to start poultry farming. I invested $297 by purchase100 chicks and 5 bags of poultry feeds that included two bags of starter and three bags of mush feeds. After rearing the broilers for 6 weeks, I was able to sell them and made a profit of $150. I also went ahead to purchase other chicks which am still raising. I am so grateful that the income from poultry farming is helping me to cater for the education of my 3 children who are both in college and secondary school. Additionally, I used $150 to support the education of the children by clearing the fee balances. They had a huge fee balance which made them constantly miss classes, seeing them going to school every day has restored the joy in my life. Lastly, I bought sufficient food with the remaining amount for the family since we are experiencing famine that resulted in high food prices.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6:30 pm when I was preparing dinner for my family. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing. Upon checking I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I lack words to express the immense joy that I felt. This is because I knew that I would be able to revive my poultry project. I then broke the news to my equally happy family before embarking on planning how we would utilise the entire amount.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to revive my business which had closed down. I was unable to revive it before due to the school fees responsibilities. I lack words to express how grateful I am for the support that lifted my life amazingly like never before. I am optimistic that with the poultry project, I will be able to earn more income from its sales. I am forever grateful for the financial support that boosted me financially and gave me financial freedom.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a businesswoman specialising in hiring out tents and seats, I am married and blessed with five children. Upon the receipt of my transfer, I thought of reviving my poultry project that had closed down. Therefore, I used KES 46800 on setting up the project. I was unable to do that before due to financial constraints with the high cost of living and the school fees responsibilities. Secondly, I was able to pay the school fees arrear where I used KES 15,000. I am so grateful for the financial boost that lifted my finances amazingly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
After I was married 10 years ago, I used to be a full-time housewife but later my husband advised me to start broiler farming in the village. I saw it as a good idea and immediately I invested in it. The new business was performing well until when I took my child to secondary school. The cash demand was high and It reached a point the business collapsed. I have desired to restart it again because it is a source of income. I am planning to spend KES 60,000 to purchase 300 chickens and feedings. In 6 weeks I can sell them and make approximately KES 6000. Other than that, I will spend the remaining amount to pay for school fees for my son who is in high school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last year December I tried to apply for a loan from particular women saving group. I was not sure if I was going to qualify until when I received an approval message. This brought a lot of joy to me because I used the amount to clear the fee balance for my child who was sitting for his end term exam.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband works in town and he earns KES 30,000 a month. This amount used to be enough to sustain all our basic needs such as food. In the year 2021, he guaranteed a colleague a loan of KES 300,000, and unfortunately, the person failed to pay it. This has affected him financially because almost half of his salary is deducted to pay for the loan. Therefore, financial challenge is the biggest hardship I am currently facing.
