How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Investing in crop farming is the goal that I have. I intend to save some amount from milk vending to boost it. This will ensure that I can hire a tractor on time to assist me in plowing the farm. Achieving this means that I will produce enough food for the family as well as animal feeds for my dairy cow.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in training us about the program and its processes during the enrollment. This was very impactful, especially in ensuring we keep the transfers safe from fraudsters. In my opinion, I feel the processes were good and just wish the organization will continue to assist the less fortunate people in society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $380 of the recent transfer to purchase one Friesian dairy cow. I was intending to start milk vending in our village like other village members so that I would earn that will support the needs of the family like food. Additionally, I will have a steady supply of milk for use and will no longer have to purchase milk or borrow from the neighbors. I am optimistic that it will give birth in the coming 3 months. Furthermore, I used $100 to purchase new and proper clothes for everyone in my family of 6. This is because we were wearing torn clothes which were very embarrassing, especially when I escort the kids to school or at a public gathering. For the remaining amount, I bought enough foodstuffs like maize flour, rice and bread since we did not have any food in the household.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On receiving the message, I was happy to confirm it was from Givedirectly. At that moment I was preparing my kids to go to school. I was much grateful and informed my husband about it and he was equally excited and we planned on withdrawing the transfer the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the great investment in a heifer. This investment has allowed me to work hard to ensure it grows to produce the best.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the first KES 25,000 of my transfer, I spent on buying a heifer. This investment has given us hope of enjoying milk production which we can sell the surplus to meet other family needs. I also used KES 10,000 in buying furniture which we didn't have. I am now happy since I don't shy away from welcoming visitors to my house because they have a place to relax. With KES 12,200 I spent in buying mattresses and clothes for myself and also for our children. We all sleep under decent bedding unlike before. With the remaining part of the transfer, I spent in buying maize which will sustain us for a couple of months.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Dairy farming is our main economic activity, receiving this money means I will acquire a dairy cow of my own. Currently I own a single heifer and 2 goats. With the purchase of this cow I foresee a production of 6 liters of milk per day which will earn me an approximate amount of KES 1500 per week.Aside from nutritional value that my family will attain I will also be financially stable .
What is the happiest part of your day?
The output from our farm has brought happiness to our family in the past 6 months. We harvested 2 sacks of maize from our 0.2 acres of land. This has enabled us to have adequate food as well as allowing us to use our incomes on other household needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband and I depend on casual jobs for a living. This is usually cumbersome because there are some days we do not get a single job to do. Futhermore the wages from this work are usually paid in bits depending on the amount of work one has done. Financial constraint has therefore become a major challenge to our household because from the incomes we get much of it is spent on stationery and other materials required at school. Having three children under the system of Competency-Based Curriculum has drained us a lot.
