How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having a low source of income, when GiveDirectly enrolled me in its program, my primary goal was to build not only a spacious but also a dececent house. The current house has been old and small to accommodate all my family members. Upon completion of this goal, my additional goal is to buy and raise livestock. Livestock is a symbol of wealth and having some livestock will help me gain respect among my community members. As my livestock increase in number, I shall find it easy to educate my children by selling just a few.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in educating all its potential recipients on the nature of its program. Through this, we have learnt a lot including Mpesa security issues. This action has been helpful in terms if decision making processes. On contrary, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do right.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my recent transfers to build a new house which is relatively bigger than the previous one. It is a two roomed house with adequate space thus my children will be able to spend in the new house. The house cost amounted to KES 30,000 since I had previously bought some building materials. I also spent KES 9000 to buy 3 goats which are currently doing well. The rest of the transfer helped me in obtaining food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was still early I the morning when I received my transfer and upon confirming that the money was indeed in my account, I felt so happy. I informed my spouse about the good news and we jointly celebrated and thanked God for the opportunity to transform our lives for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
We have been sleeping on the floor and old clothes were our beddings. Due to this, I had started experiencing back pains and in order to avoid this, I would at times sleep while sitted. Also, living in a house that cannot be closed makes one not to have a sound sleep due to fear of uncertainties. The transfers enabled me to acquire a new bed and a matress and also fixed a door. Currently, my daily life is different as I sleep comfortably without having to worry about anything.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I live in a small house without a door that we use as a kitchen, sitting room and a bedroom at the same time. My family is still young but we have always wanted to build a bigger house so that as my children continue to grow, the will have a place to sleep. Also, my son had come of age and was supposed to start going to school. I had only acquired a chance at our neighboring school but had not started attending classes as I had not paid for his fee. After receiving my transfer, spent KES 5000 to pay for my his school fees, KES 23000 to purchase a wooden door and some building materials to use in the construction of a house for my family. Also, I spent KES 15000 to buy a bed and a matress. I settled on this since we have been sleeping on the floor and I had started having some back pains. I spent the remaining KES 10500 to buy three sacks of maize for our consumption.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a spacious and descent three bedroom house for my family. The current house I own isn't enough for my family plus any visitor who might pay us a visit. I currently live in a one bedroom house which can't shelter my entire family. My first born is expected to start school in July this year, I will use the balance to take him to a better private school with quality education. Doing this will give me the peace of mind I have always desired since I got married.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The afternoon is the happiest part of my day. Despite the hardships I face, I use my afternoon to make stories with my friends and this makes me a happy woman.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is food insecurity. My family is not guaranteed the normal three meals a day. Sometimes I spend the whole day without eating anything. My husband has been struggling with his casual jobs but they are nolonger sustainable due to the effects of Covid 19 pandemic.
