How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had planned on building a better and more spacious house for my family. We lived in a small grass-thatched house that could not host all the family members comfortably. This was so demoralizing and stressful when there were some visitors. currently, we are so happy and we live comfortably.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving money to the poor in the community to build a better house, buy dairy cows and pay school fees for their children in various schools is what GiveDirectly does well. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 22,000 to purchase building materials to build a better and more spacious house for my family. We lived in a small grass-thatched house that could not host all my family members comfortably. I am so happy because now we have a spacious house and whenever we have visitors we no longer get worried. I spent KES 12,000 on purchasing two goats. I had always wished to start a goats rearing project but I did not have the money. Goats reproduce twice per year and help in case of any emergencies. I spent KES 6,200 on purchasing two sacks of maize to feed my family. I spent KES 5,000 on buying beds and beddings for my family. The rest of the money I added the stock to my cereals business that I run at the shopping center near home. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had visited my farms in my daughter's house that week when I woke up one morning to the great news from GiveDirectly. I was filled with joy when I confirmed that the message pop-up that I had just received was about the transfer that we had been promised some weeks ago. We celebrated with my daughter who was also happy that the plans I had been talking of were son coming to pass. I thanked God and tried calling GiveDirectly to at least give my gratitude but the line was busy all day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the joy of seeing my daughter enjoy a good time in school without being sent home as had been the case in the past few months. Clearing her school fees gave both of us peace of mind as I am no longer struggling much in raising her fees and at the same time she's no longer spending most of her time on her way home to collect the school fees. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for this amazing support and I am looking forward to other great projects once I receive the second transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It has never been easy buying enough milk for my family of five in the past months since I only had a heifer in my field. On receiving the first transfer, my household decided to purchase another dairy cow that will not only provide milk for our domestic use but also surplus for sale as a source of income. I spent KES 22000 of my first transfer on obtaining a good breed that has given me hope of plenty production of milk in the future. I also settled school fees for my daughter who had frequented coming home every week as the school management has always stressed the clearance of school fees for every student to enjoy all lessons in the term. I had to clear all the arrears and equip her with all the stationeries that she needed at a total cost of KES5400. I am glad that she is now settled with peace of mind, and no longer missing lessons. I had been living with my daughter-in-law who was not enrolled since she didn't have a house of her own, I spent KES10000 supporting her construction work that is almost complete at the moment. She is so happy that GiveDirectly gave us this support that has seen her house complete and will soon be moving into the new house. I spent the remaining amount on buying my clothes worth KES3200, obtained a sack f maize at KES2800, injected KES1000 into my grocery business, and also settled a debt of KES470 that I had. I am grateful for all that I have been able to do within this short time courtesy of GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean that I will be able to build a better house. I live in my one-roomed house with my husband, daughter in-law and her children. I plan to build a bigger house with KES 30,000 from the transfer so that I can stay with my husband and leave this other one to my daughter in-law and her children because we do not have privacy staying together. I will also use KES 10,000 to pay school fees for my daughter and also buy her school uniform because this is another challenge that I am going through.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the last six months, I have worked at the hotel consistently and also got other jobs to do. With this, I get money that I save and pay school fees for my child. Seeing her go to school without any arrears has made me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The major challenge that I am going through is financial constraints. I am employed by my brother in his hotel near our home as a waiter and the money that I get (KES 250 daily) is not sufficient to cater for the family that I have at home and educating my daughter.
