How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Initially, I had planned to pay school fees for only daughter who is currently in four form. Immediately I settled her fee arrears, I was able to develope a new plan of building a new house. For the past 5 years, I had been living in a grass thatched house whose sides have been washed off by rain. In addition, its roof had been leaking despite my several attempts to repair it. I am so glad that currently I am having an iron roofed house with an additional room. I am no longer worried about rains.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in doing follow up to all its recipients. Through this, the staffs get to learn of the impact the transfers have on he community members. They also get opportunity to address whatever challenges some recipients experience. However, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a total of KES 33,000 from my most recent transfer on building a new iron roofed house. The previous one was an old grass thatched house that was almost collapsing. I am happy that with the help of GD transfer, nowadays living in a better house, what I could imagine I could have at the moment. I also spent KES 13,000 on buying a water tank that helps me in harvesting rain water. As a result I do not need to go to the stream to fetch water so frequently.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had already opened my grocery business at the shopping center when I received a message from GiveDirectly bearing the good news. Together with the other businesswomen who received the same message, we were so excited as this happened to everyone almost at the same time. We could not hide our joy since it has been the topic all over that week since we were given a range of dates that kept us expecting.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
As a single mother to my three kids, it has been hard meeting all the financial obligations both within and out of my household. Starting an extra project with the small amount I had been getting from my groceries was so hard that I had always been left with dreams that could not be realized. I am glad that I had been able to make great differences with the transfers, and more so installation of pipes that are currently conveying water to my doorstep.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Farming has been difficult not only on our farms but also in every household within our village due to the recurring periods of less to no rainfall at all. This has been so devastating in many instances seeing our crops dry up before their maturity stages forcing us to buy all the foodstuff from other farmers who have been practicing irrigation on their farms as they have access to piped water. On receiving this first transfer, I had to spend KES 15000 in buying and connecting pipes from the main distribution pipe to my doorstep. This will ease my all-season farming since I am soon making extensions of the pipes to my garden. I also had school fees areas for my three children and had to pay KES 17000 to clear the debts and to cover part of the new term. With the remaining amount, I managed to construct a new kitchen after demolishing an old one that had been in use for more than 10 years now. I am glad that it turned out that it will not only be serving just like a kitchen but also giving an extra room with one bed that can accommodate at least two of my children or a visitor whenever we have one.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Getting this money to me mean that i will be able to clear school fees for my child who is in secondary school. The school owes me 170 dollars. I also have a grass thatched house which i use as kitchen. Its leaking when it rains. Sometimes its even hard to cook. I want to construct a iron roofed house which will cost around 150 dollars. I also have a problem with water. Our source of water is the river which is far from my house and the water is not safe for drinking. We have tapped water and i would like to change to my house. This will enable me to get water for household use and even use for farming. Our area is prone to drought. So when i get this water i can do irrigation in my farm.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I don't have specific time. I am single mother. I have two Children living with me and they are in different schools. Sometimes it difficult to be happy knowing that i have not paid their school fees. However despite the challenges evening is my favorite since I will get to rest from work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been lack of money. Iam a single mother and I have children in school. I have small business in the nearby town but it cannot sustain all my needs.
