How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to work extra harder and make sure that I have enough savings purposely for my daughter's education journey. She recently joined a nursing course and I desire to see her graduate so that she can grab a good job. She is the only one that I am now relying on and I am certain that once she succeeds, she will transform our entire household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is the best organisation I have ever come across. Its mode of operation makes it so unique from the rest. The idea of helping the needy individually financially has never happened before in our lives. Apart from that, being allowed to choose what to purchase was the best thought ever. I, therefore, do not see any need to change anything as they proceed to the next villages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $300 of my second transfer on clearing the pending arrears for my daughter who finished her secondary education last year. She was denied her certificate because of the huge arrears. Therefore she could neither proceed with further studies nor seek jobs. This situation has been stressing both of us since we couldn't see any light ahead. God has however been so faithful to and it still feels like a dream. Also after acquiring her certificate I paid fees she immediately got enrolled in a nursing course. I am therefore hopeful that through His mercies, she will also graduate in three years. This will not only be a win for her but for the entire family because she is the only one who had the opportunity to go to school. Being her only surviving parent, it has never been easy. With the remaining amount, I bought food for the two children and other basic needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving the transfers from Give Directly was a blessing to me.I was at home alone doing laundry,I heard my phone ringing, since I am illiterate and does not know how to check the messages, I had to rush to my helper to assist in checking if it was the transfers . I was expecting to receive the transfers, and therefore could not trust anyone from my neighbourhood. I was so happy as I had not received any huge amount from any charitable organization before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that, having replaced my beddings, I nolonger have implications on my back as I have a very comfortable bed and new beddings.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the transfers to buy a bed, mattress and to replace the beddings. I have never had a bed, and could sleep on the floor ,with very torn and old beddings. I have never had a sound sleep till recently when I bought beddings with the transfers from Give Directly, this costed about Kshs 25,000. I bought livestock worth Kshs 25,000 for remembrance, this includes chicken and a goat.In the future, I will be selling eggs while in excess, and for my own consumption. On the other hand, I will sell the goat to once it grows big so as to cater for my children's school fees. I used the balance of Kshs 5,000 to buy food, Since then, my family has been feeding on regular and balanced diet for several weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For the last two months I have been having sleepless nights on how am going to clear my daughter's school fees. She is now in form four and she is going to do her last exam in March. In the event I get this money, I plan to use 20000KES to clear her tuition fees and save like 50000KES which will take her to college when the results are out. By that, I will be sure when she complete her education any job opportunity that will come on her way is going to help herself and her family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In July last year, the situation of food insecurity was very adverse and as a mother, I had no idea how I could provide for my family. One of my daughter got a job and she bought us 25kg of rice and that turned everything back to normal like we were rich. It was a short period relief but it was worthy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
School fees for my two children and two grandchildren has been a menace. Sometimes they are forced to spend like two weeks at home because of fees arrears. This situation has affected their performance in school and for some of them they have even lost hope in continuing with education. I did not go to school myself but I believe nowadays education is very important for any child to grow independent. Therefore, I feel bad when I see my generation is unable to get quality education like other children.
