How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to invest more in my grocery business. This is because it is the only source of income I rely on. Therefore, if I get some money which I know I will get from the few savings I make, I will add stock to my grocery which he has been running for the family's upkeep. Having an established business is an assurance of a good income, hence family upkeep becomes manageable.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Initially, it was a struggle to get fresh drinking water. To an extent, we had to drink the dam water since we had no alternative. By so doing, we were exposing ourselves to some diseases. Glory to God we did not get infected. As of now, I salute GiveDirectly for the cash program it started. This program has uplifted us in different sectors depending on one's needs. As a village, we are very grateful, and how we wish the program could be recurring for the third and fourth registration.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For a while, I had desired to get fresh water fixed at my home. Not only being expensive to buy a bucket of 20 liters of water at KES 5.00, but it was also hectic to travel a long distance to source the same. When I withdrew the money, I Spend KES 15000.00 to fix fresh tap water at my home. Currently, I am happy and grateful because my family has access to fresh water and also I am selling the water at a profit. Thereafter, I bought 10 pieces of iron sheets for KES 10000.00 to construct a business structure. The aim of building the structure was to start a grocery business which I started with a capital of KES 5000.00. Being a drought season; I opted to keep the remaining amount for my family's use.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at night after dinner and we were almost going to bed with my husband when I had a beep on my phone. My mind was tired, and I almost ignored the message, but on second thought, I reached out for my phone and read the message. I was very pleased and shared the news with my husband.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is opening a new business which has changed our life. The clothing business is picking up well and so is my business of selling sardines and tomatoes. My husband is not stressed because on his bad days, I can support him with my little earnings.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We have been struggling financially with my husband. He is not employed and has been selling homemade detergents and bleaching detergents. The business has been on the low with struggles to find an ideal market. When I received the cash transfer, we both discussed and concluded to spend KES 25,000 to start a clothing business. I also bought a bed and a mattress with KES 12,000 and opened my business of selling sardines and tomatoes with KES in 2000. I couldn’t help but change my wardrobe with new clothes for me and my husband with KES 4000. The rest of the cash was spent on foodstuffs that would last us for a month.
