How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The goal that I have is to support the education of my 4 children who are still schooling. 2 children are about to join secondary school next year. I am planning to get cash that would ease their transition to junior secondary school where they will require a huge amount of fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in helping the needy households in the community. Visiting everyone and enrolling them without demanding for any payment is what they did. I feel that there is nothing that they did not do well during the enrollment and follow-up calls.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $200 of my transfers to pay part of the cost of 2 acres of land that I had bought before the transfers which were of costing $1000. Currently, I am happy that the debt is about to be cleared. In addition, I used $100 to clear the fee arrears of my daughter who is in a tailoring college in Kilifi town. She is doing a dressmaking course and had a huge fee balance that way yet to be paid. Similarly, I used $100 to complete the construction of a 2 roomed, irony roofed, mud-walled house for the family. I had begun the construction a year ago but I had not completed it due to lack of enough income. Lastly, I spent the remaining amount to clear the payment of school fees for my 3 children who are still in primary and purchase food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
it was around 6 Pm I had gone to collect water, and when I come back to check my phone there was a message from GiveDirectly confirming that I have received KES 55,000. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I was at home with my children and we all celebrated with joy. I knew I would be able to purchase a tailoring machine for my daughter who had just cleared a tailoring course. I went and withdraw from the meeting the following day and started to plan with my family members. I am grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Purchasing a tailoring machine for my daughter is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because she cleared a tailoring course and she wanted to start the business. I was able to pay the college fees balance as well. I a so happy because she is now happy and has started working. I depend on small-scale farming and the produce that I get is for consumption I had no other source of income. I did not know where to get the money to pay for all this. My daughter is getting some income now. I know when the business gets better she gonna help me pay the school fees for her siblings and this could have helped me. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards and enabled us to start new businesses.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 on paying the college fees that were outstanding after my daughter completed her studies. This was to enable her to get the certificate. I am so grateful because this was giving me sleepless nights. I purchased a tailoring machine that cost KES 17,000 for my daughter. She is currently doing the tailoring work and this earns her some income and she is so grateful. I spent KES 15,000 on purchasing four goats. This is my investment since I will sell them when they reproduce in the future to pay school fees for my children. The remaining amount of money I spent on food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Empowerment is what comes to mind when I think of how to spend this money. I have five children in school, four are in primary school and one is in college. I plan to pay their school fees and for the one in college go a step ahead and buy a sowing machine and some materials to enable her start off her tailoring career from college. I will also venture in sales, buy a few african attire and sell them around the village. Empowerment translates to self reliance and once this is achieved I will be a proud mother.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The days I get a call for some work are the brightest, the last time I received such a call was in December, 2021. In a day I would warn 300 KES and this went a long in catering to our basic needs. I would come back home happy because I had food to feed my children and I could save some cash to pay their school fees.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financially I am constrained, I am struggling to buy food and water for domestic use. Ones in awhile I get casual jobs of construction but they can only sustain me for a short time. I then have to depend solely on my husbands income to enable me attend to the basic needs. This comes with its own challenge since his income is no consistent and he works away from the village.
