What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
For the past three months, my family of six has been hospitalized and diagnosed with Malaria. The April flash floods harboured mosquitos and this increased malaria infection in my area. I do not have medical cover for my family and this forced me to spend $40 out of my pocket to provide medication for my loved ones. I am struggling financially to provide for my family and this worries me a lot. My two-acre maize plantations was swept away by the flash floods and this has completely destroyed my family income. All of our family savings are depleted and this is making our life miserable.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I hold a diploma in community development and social work, I have been applying for a job since 2014 without any success. A month ago I was luckily shortlisted and interviewed for the position of Assistant chief. I saw my dream of securing employment in the public service come true. This made me feel excited.
What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Our main house was partly destroyed by the flash floods that occurred in the month of April. GiveDirectly's cash transfer will help me renovate our house and make it habitable. This will cost $150 of my transfers. I have been thinking of starting a poultry farm to boost my family income. My financial struggle made it difficult for me to implement this project. I am happy that this dream will come true when I receive my transfers from GiveDirectly. I will use $180 of the transfers to kickstart this project. I am also struggling to irrigate my farm since I do not have water pipes to supply water. I usually borrow pipes from my neighbors and this delays my farming process. I will spend $400 of my transfers from GiveDirectly to buy two HDPE water pipes.
