What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
First, we used $130 as a deposit to start my husband's driving course. He has always wanted to get a driving license because riding the motorbike is risky for his health, especially during cold and rainy weather. This new skill will open up more opportunities for him, and we both feel it's a step towards a more secure future.
Next, I spent $100 on a mattress and a bed. For too long, we had been using a mat and sleeping on the floor ever since our old bed broke. This new bed has brought us much-needed comfort and better rest, which has already made a positive difference in our daily lives. Additionally, I used $100 to buy 18 iron sheets to roof the house I've been building. The current house had a leaking roof since we had used palm leaves for it's roof and it would leak during the rain season. Improving our home is a priority, and these iron sheets are a crucial part of that process. I then used $110 to buy a sewing machine, as I have been training to become a tailor. Owning my own machine makes practicing much easier and brings me closer to starting a tailoring business. I also bought a goat for $40, which will be valuable in times of emergency. Finally, I used the remainder of the money to buy water containers and essential food items. These purchases have not only improved our immediate living conditions but have also laid the groundwork for a more stable and prosperous future.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before, I used to sleep on the floor. It was uncomfortable, and I often woke up with aches and pains. But now, thanks to the money I received, I have a bed. I can't describe the difference it has made. Sleeping on a proper bed has improved my sleep quality and overall health significantly. Not only that, but I also now live in a good house with an iron roof. Before, my house was made out of palm leaves, and it leaked whenever it rained. We couldn't sleep through the night because of the constant dripping water. But with the transfers from GiveDirectly, I was able to repair my house and put a proper roof over our heads. Now, we sleep soundly, regardless of the weather. The peace of mind and comfort this has brought to my family is immeasurable.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 3pm, and I was relaxing at home when I heard a message notification on my phone. Seeing the message, I was filled with excitement—it was the unconditional cash transfer from GiveDirectly. I continued with my evening duties, but at 9pm, I called my husband who is in Mombasa to inform him about the transfers. I had to wait for this time to ensure that he was at home and relaxed from a hard day at work. He was very happy and said that his dream of getting a driving license would come true. I then planned on traveling the next day to Mombasa to go plan well with my husband.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Life is so tough at the moment because of the financial constraints that I am currently facing. Looking at the nature of my house, it doesn't fit me and this has lowered my social status in the village. I am always so ashamed to find myself in this situation and I can not host any visitor. What a life! Whenever I look at my house, tears of sorrow flow over my cheeks and I have prayed one day, my worries will turn to blessings. Hence, financial constraints stands out to be my biggest challenge.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December 2023, my husband started the construction of a one-roomed iron-roofed house for us. Although this house is yet to be completed, I am grateful for the efforts he has put to ensure we change the status quo of our livelihood. Considering his determination, I am confidently certain that, soon we will live in a decent house. Thus, this is basically what has brought me joy.
What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Purchasing a productive land is the most priority plan for me once I receive this money. At the moment, I depend on subsistence farming but it is not reliable since the land has become unproductive, a situation that has led to food insecurity to my household. I plan to spend $600 of my transfers to buy a half an acre next to Galana river. This will ensure us improved production to offset the hunger menace. On the other hand, I will use the remaining amount to complete my house and purchasing of decent beddings. Achieving this will mean a better life to me and the family at large.
