How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it would have been if I never received the transfer. I have cleared school fees for my two children which have lessened the pressure I had over the casual labors I used to do.
For a long time, this had been the hardest part of our household's budget. We had been depending on livestock and in some extreme cases, we would sell a piece of land to ensure that we keep all bills checked with the school fees sorted. We are glad that GiveDirectly came to our rescue, enabled us to add some livestock to the herd and clear all debts.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Since GiveDirectly came to our village, I have been grateful to see the huge transformation around. The money received was so impactful and in my opinion, it was work well done for GiveDirectly to have taught us in the initial meetings how best we can handle the finances as we plan on what we needed to invest in as we avoid losses. Everyone adhered and dedicated all their efforts to the good ideas they had.
Even though we managed to fix the household issues we had, it has been my feeling that GiveDirectly would have done us best if at all they would have sorted at least a common utility project which could be facilitating the conveyance of piped water to every household. This would have solved the great challenge that we can't handle on our own as everyone has plans for the amount received and never willing to contribute towards a common course.
It also seemed unfair that many single fathers whose children are under the care of their grandmothers. These are the fathers who are always out trying to make ends meet for their children and were unfortunate not to have been considered.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the second transfer, clearing school fees for my two sons was a priority. I spent 23000KES on my elder son who is currently in the University and 16000KES of the remaining for my daughter currently in secondary school. With the last bit that was still in my account, I used it on buying cement, sand, and the transport cost towards the completion of the floors and walls in the new house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had just woken up and was opening doors to go out and I heard my phone beep. I had a warm feeling in my heart that it must have been the transfer from GiveDirectly and upon checking it, indeed it was. I thanked God for the cash and went to tell my husband who was also happy. My children were still asleep and when they heard that the transfer had come, they asked for loaves of bread which I bought for them.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I was going about asking for money to pay my daughter's school fees who was just about to sit for exams and failure to pay the money, she would not be allowed to do the exams. I sent the balance to her immediately I received the transfer as she was left with only two days. I had a house that had stalled and sleeping in it was very cold. Right now, I have assembled materials that will help me complete the construction of the house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I paid my daughter's school fees who is in University that was just about to sit for her exams. Right now, I am improving my house which had stalled due to lack of money.I also ploughed a piece of land and planted maize.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition has always to educate my 6 children through college. I have a daughter who recently joined university and 2 are in secondary level yet paying their fees is an uphill task. My husband is a security guard in the city earning meagre income of Kenya Shillings 18,000 which is hardly enough to cater for the entire family's needs. Even though we grow maize and beans in a 0.8 acre piece of land to supplement from what my husband earns, it is still not enough for the family. Giving my children the best education is the joy of my life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend my morning hours by going to work in our 0.8 piece of land where we have grown maize and beans. I spend my afternoon by fetching firewood and feeding my 4 cattle. This leaves my evening the happiest part of my day since it is the only time I have to rest and spend time with the rest of the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship we have faced in life is inadequacy of School fees to educate my children. Initially, we relied on growing maize and beans in our 0.8 piece of land but due to poor climatic condition we hardly harvest enough to cater for the entire family's needs. This forced my husband to look for an alternative source of income as a security guard in the city earning a meagre wage of Ksh 8,000. Give directly came in handy at this hard time.
