How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has changed in ways I never thought would be possible. I always desired to have some livestock in my homestead but due to lack of money, it was not possible to purchase them. Today I have two cows and two goats. This is wealth and I plan on selling them in future to help raise tuition fee for my son when he goes to college or university. The fact that he is about to complete his secondary education after the much hustle he has had to go through is a joy. I remember the days I would go borrowing money from friends so that I could take him back to school, at times I would be lucky to find support, other times I was not so lucky. Ever since GiveDirectly gave me this money I have not borrowed from anyone and I am happy about it. This year as my son went back to school, I bought him a new uniform and a pair of shoes. As a parent, this makes me really proud and I know it will boost his morale as he studies and he will excel in his coming exams.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly only does well. I had a lot of problems previously that would cause me to have sleepless nights, but I thank God that I am now at peace and full of joy. When my house was carried away by floods, I was left homeless and with a lot of anxiety and stress. Today, thanks to GiveDirectly's money I am constructing a new house which I except to move into soon.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used part of the second transfer in paying my child's school fees. I had difficulties in paying his school fees, he would be sent away for school fees since I lacked the resources to educate him. I am happy now that he is now in school and learning with his fellow friends as they prepare for their form four exams. Another amount I used in buying a cow and two goats. I previously bought one cow with the first transfer, but I saw it was not enough to tilt my land thus I resulted in adding another one so as to help in the farm. I will rare this cattle and when they reproduce I can sell them at a higher price and get some good profits. These profits will come in handy when my son completes his high school education and is required to proceed to college. The other amount, I have kept aside so as to construct my house. It is unfortunate that my house was carried away by the previous floods. My son had to accommodate me in his house but I was not so comfortable since he has his own family. I am happy knowing that in a few months I will be moving into my new house.

The biggest difference is that I was staying in the neighbourhood since I didn't have my own house but now the transfer has enabled me to construct one, I feel myself esteem has been raised because I am not a beggar anymore.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy, filled with joy and after a long time, I felt peaceful in my heart. I knew that I will be able to have a new house which has always been a dream but could not be accomplished due to low income.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I was staying at my neighbour's house since I didn't have my ownhouse. Life was not easy for me and I have struggled for long to build my own house but always failed due to inadequate finances. On receiving this transfer, I purchased timber and iron sheets which I used to put up a new house. I also used part of the transfer to pay for labour for masons who helped construct my new house. I also spent my transfer to buy a cow and 2 goats and I trust that these will reproduce in future and be able to sell them at a profit to help pay school fees for my children who will be joining high school next year. In addition to these, I also spent part of my transfer to do some shopping for my son who will be finalizing his secondary school education next year.
