How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal which is to start a new business(a retail shop) in the village. I am hopeful that the business will do well since we only have one shop which serves the whole village. Therefore there is a high demand and I am so sure that the business will be very lucrative. I believe I will no longer be straining to meet my family's daily needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a good job by ensuring every needy and vulnerable individual was enrolled in the program. There was no discrimination moreover, everything was fairly done. The officers were also down-to-earth and very approachable. I do not see any sector that deserves a change from the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying two dairy cows at KES 40000. These have been the well thoughtful living assets that I have been aspiring to purchase but they were very costly. I feel there is now a relief in my entire household because my children can now take tea. Initially, we used to buy from friends which were a bit expensive and sometimes we couldn't afford it. Apart from that, I am planning to sell the remaining liters since for now, it's only one cow that produces milk. I believe through that, I will be earning an income that will enable me to provide for my family's needs with ease. With the remaining amount, I bought sufficient foodstuffs for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember it was exactly 9 in the morning I was with my family, we had just finished taking our breakfast as usual and we were just having a good time together. Then my phone started ringing so loudly which was so unusual. I decided to check who might have sent the message at that moment since I wasn't expecting to hear from anyone. I confirmed that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly they had debuted my first transfer as they had promised some days back. I was so happy that finally, all my troubles would come to an end. It was a joyous moment for me and my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers, I was able to clear the college fees arrears for my spouse. He was enrolled early this year in a teaching course in a technical institute. They were however about to sit for his end year exams. It was so stressful because we have been trying to even borrow loans to settle to arrears but were never granted. He was so hopeless and stressed and thus affected me as well. While he was at school I had to step in as the family breadwinner and I could rely on odd jobs which have low incomes. The little I could earn could only fend for our basic needs like daily meals. We have therefore been depending on the government bursaries and well-wishers to aid his education journey. For now, I am optimistic that once he graduates, and gets a well-paying job, our lives will never be the same again and I wouldn't have achieved all these if it were not for the timely support from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part KES 30000 of my first transfer on clearing college fees for my spouse who was in his first year. The money came in good time because he was about to sit for the end of his academic year and we were sure that he would miss the examination because of the arrears. In addition to that, I bought a dairy cow at KES 15000 which has been my desire to keep in my homestead for it has numerous benefits. I oater bought a new high-density mattress KES 4000 to replace the old one which had worn out. We are now sleeping in a nice place without any discomforts like before. With the remaining amount of money, I brought enough foodstuffs for my family that would at least sustain us to the next harvesting season.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means I will be able to start my own business to support my husband because he is currently the sole breadwinner in the household. I am planning to use KES 50,000 from the transfer to start a retail shop in the village. There is a big gap in the village in that people are forced to walk for 2 hours to get to the nearest kiosk. Even after walking for the two hours, there is no guarantee that you will get the commodities you want. I will specialize on selling food stuffs and learning materials and this will earn me handsome profits. I will use the balance to buy two indigenous cows and an ox-plough for subsistence farming so as to boost my household food productivity capability. This will assure that my household has enough food. I can also hire the ox-plough to neighbours at a price thus increasing my household's income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day because I wake and take breakfast with my children unlike in the afternoon and evening where I can only be found in the forest burning charcoal or tapping aloe vera. I hate engaging in these activities and I only find myself doing them because I am out of options.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of money to sustain my family; something that has forced me to embark on energy-draining occupations such as charcoal burning and aloe vera tapping. These occupation have some negative implications on my health especially chest and abdominal pains at night. Irregardless of the toughness of these occupations, I still don't have an option but do them because my husband's income as a non-trained primary school teacher can not sustain the entire family.
