How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Food insecurity has been the norm in my region recently due to a reduction in the sizes of land under cultivation. At the moment, I strive to purchase a piece of land however small it may seem. After achieving this, I will plant animal feeds on it so that my livestock will have a constant supply of feeds and this will ensure a continuous supply of milk. This will enable me to earn through the sale of surplus.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
My village looks new at a glance since many iron-roofed houses have been built. Receiving money in a lump sum for free is such a blessing and we're grateful to GiveDirectly for it. The officers who enrolled us were respectful and did their work diligently. Generally, I do not see anything that GiveDirectly did not do well since everything they did looks good.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My spouse who works as a security officer is the breadwinner to our family while I tend to the farm. GiveDirectly did a good job in my village by educating us on how best we could spend the transfer to better our lives. Because of this, I spent KES 30000 to buy a dairy cow so that I will continue enjoying the fruits of GiveDirectly in our lives when it calves. Apart from this, I spent KES 15000 to pay school fees for my two children in secondary school to avoid being sent back home fees and spent the remaining amount on foodstuffs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My mother-in-law had passed on and we were on our way to the mortuary when I received a message notification on my phone. My spouse had it since I was mentally unstable due to the shock of the bad news concerning the death of our mother. I became so happy when he informed me of the good news and despite having lost my mother, this money gave me hope and made me smile on that day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life has never been the same again ever since I received the transfer. This is because I am now a proud owner of 5 goats since two have already been reproduced from the three that I bought. These are investments to me that I can rely on in case of financial constraints especially in paying school fees for my children. The fact that I am also almost receiving my second transfer gives me hope that I will be a proud owner of a dairy cow that will enable me to earn some money through the sale of surplus since I am planning to use it to acquire one.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 10000 to buy 3 goats as a way of investing this money. I will be selling one and use the money to pay school fees for my children when they have increased in number. In addition, I spent KES 15000 on the purchase of two three-seater seats and seat cushions, KES 1500 on a table, KES 7500 on two mattresses and blankets, KES 10000 on clothes for my family, and gave my spouse the remaining KES 4000 to use on his personal needs after using KES 7000 to buy two sacks of maize.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money would mean a reunion for my family. My husband has been forced to stay in town looking for casual jobs to sustain our family needs. With Givedirectly transfers I would like to start a small kiosk in this village dealing in household goods because there's none at the moment close by. My husband would then come back home to run the business with me. This will be a big reprieve because we'll be able to co-parent together as we earn a living.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually wake up so early to prepare breakfast for my children before they leave for school and it is usually the happiest part of my day because my children come first in my life and this is a time dedicated to them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have 2 children who dropped out of school after finishing their primary level of studies. I was so helpless as a parent because I had no money at all, this is the biggest hardship I have faced.
