How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Over the next year and beyond, my primary objective is to fully fence my entire land. To achieve this, I intend to utilize the proceeds from selling the goats once they have multiplied. Above all, I feel content with the progress I have made thus far.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The transformative effects of GiveDirectly in our village are evident everywhere. Our lives have undergone remarkable positive changes. What impressed me the most was the unconditional nature of the transfer and the utmost respect shown to us by the field officers. I have no complaints so far, as everything proceeded seamlessly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After successfully fencing my land, I considered purchasing a gate to not only give it a complete look but also to enhance security and protect my farm from any potential damage caused by the goats. Previously, this was a challenging task, as financial responsibilities for school fees made it difficult to allocate funds for such improvements. I live with my husband, who works as a teacher, and our six children, some of whom are still in school while others have already grown. Due to a past illness that left me with a disability, I am now a stay-at-home wife. Upon receiving my third transfer, I decided to allocate $50 to install a gate on my land. Afterward, I invested $100 in purchasing a cupboard. I then bought a goat for $50, and finally, I spent $100 to pay for my children's school fees. The tremendous support I received has immensely improved my living standards, and I am incredibly grateful for it.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My aspiration for the upcoming year and beyond is to expand my goat herd and acquire more land to enhance my income streams. To achieve this goal, I intend to use the funds from my third transfer to invest in additional goats. I am confident that with proper care and attention, my herd will thrive and enable me to purchase more land in the future. While I am proud of my current accomplishments, I am aware that there is always room for progress and development. Through perseverance and hard work, I am optimistic that I will fulfill my ambition of becoming a thriving goat farmer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What struck me the most about the cash disbursement was its unconditional nature. It was a remarkable experience and a stark contrast to the conditional and, at times, exploitative transactions I had encountered in the past. I was also impressed by the field officers who oversaw the project. They were not only knowledgeable but also courteous and considerate. The registration procedure was also exceptional, as it was transparent and unbiased. There was no prejudice or bias, and everyone had an equal opportunity to take part. It was gratifying to observe such an impartial and transparent procedure.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The burden of school fees hindered me from achieving my goal of providing my family with essential items. I had to forego many luxuries and prioritize paying for my children's education. My husband works as a teacher, and with six children still living with us, we relied solely on his income as my health condition rendered me unable to work. However, after receiving the funds, I was able to purchase two goats worth $100 and a $100 cupboard for our home. I also paid $100 for my children's school fees and used the remaining money to purchase food supplies, which was previously difficult due to financial constraints. I cannot fully express my overwhelming happiness and gratitude for this opportunity, which has significantly improved our standard of living.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the cash transfer, I was at home relaxing. I'm a physically challenged person. I heard my phone ringing and upon checking, I noted the text notification that I had received cash from Segovia Technologies of $200 from GiveDirectly. I was so excited that this cash would help me meet my goals.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest problem difference has been that I was able to save up some money to buy sufficient foodstuff to cater for my family. I am happy to say that neither I nor my family goes to bed on an empty stomach. My life has been transformed for the better and I'm thankful for the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Life was unbearable in the village after I fell sick and got paralyzed. This forced me to be dependent on my husband and kids for everything. Fortunately, GiveDirectly came to my aid when I was promised an unconditional cash transfer. My husband is a teacher, and together we have seven kids. Upon receiving the cash transfer, I chose to invest in goat rearing where I bought four goats at $140. This enabled me to secure a source of income in the future. The remainder of the transfers, I saved to buy foodstuff. The support from the organization immensely changed my life and I'm eternally grateful.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
One year ago, I developed spinal cord injuries that rendered me nonproductive. I can barely do any job as I am bedridden. As a result, I depend on my husband's teaching job and my children's motorcycle business to raise my family of 9. When I receive the transfers I intend to use $200 on purchasing 10 goats as a source of income. Goats thrive well in a hot environment because they are drought-resistant and breed so fast and within one year, they birth twice. I hope to use the rest of the transfers on school fees for my children in grade 8, grade 10, grade 12 and university. I will be glad that they complete school and be independent hence assisting me with supporting the household further.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Each mother hopes to provide for her children fully. Although my health denied me the chance to fend for my family of 9, I am grateful that they have never lacked what to eat. I am appreciative of my husband , who despite having 2 families, has always assisted my children towards provision.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When I fell ill in October 2022, I attended medication at Nakuru Level 5 hospital and I was admitted for 3 days. I was diagnosed with spinal cord injuries as a result of TB and therefore I had to seek the services of an orthopaedic trauma and spine surgeon which is expensive. Although my health is now improving, I am saddened to be bedridden and thus can not fend for my family of 9. I now depend on my children and husband to provide food daily for the household. This is stressful as I feel I am a burden to them.
