How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After spending all the transfers on what I needed most, I am so grateful that I managed to finally erect a new house that we are currently living in. This had been the hardest project we had been contemplating as a family as raising such a huge amount at once to construct a new house had been so hard, and this transfer made a difference that could not have been possible if I had never received it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, all that has been done by GiveDirectly in our village and specifically my household is a job well done. I am grateful to have been part of the program as I have managed to do quite a lot that would not have been possible without the aid. I was much glad that we were given free will to choose how best we would spend our money as this allowed us to serve the immediate and most pressing needs in our households. So far I can't complain nor have heard anyone complaining but I am thankful for the great changes in my household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After spending all the first transfer on all that I treated to be urgent, I spent the first part of the second transfer on the construction of a new house. I had been living in an old one with the other household members. Even though it was so small and was getting older and rusty, I was grateful that it has kept us for such a long time. After buying and allocating amounts to all the required materials, I also paid 2400KES school fees for my son, repaid the 12000KES loan I had obtained from our local savings group, and used the last bit on buying foodstuff for the household.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I had gone to my usual workplace when I heard a message notification. I was a bit curious and without wasting time, I decided to check its content. When I realized that my transfer had been sent, I was happy and changed my plans and even went back home. The message really made my day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The fact that I managed to clear school fees for my son makes the biggest difference in my daily life. Before the coming of GiveDireetcky, he used to be sent home most of the time due to the huge fee arrears. This matter has really been frustrating me as a parent and I had no asset that maybe I can sell to pay the fees. Therefore he needs to stay home for weeks. Since I am illiterate, my wish was to see our children getting a good education. Therefore the moment I recived the cash transfer, I had to clear his school fees so he they can study without any distractions. I am now relaxed and positive that he will have a bright future. I will forever be thankful to GiveDirectly for bringing a great impact unto my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, nails, and a number and a wooden door. This was to construct a new house because the recent one was very small and in critical condition. Allo I used KES 8000 of the transfer in paying the laborer as his labor charge. Also, I cleared school fees for my son who has been sent home frequently for fees and I am glad he is now in school without any disturbances. I later bought sufficient food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My desire has been to provide my child with quality education up to the university level so that he may be of good help to me and my society. Investing on his educational needs is what deceiving this money means to me. Currently, he is in form 2 and my plan is to spend USD 300 to clear his form 2 fee arrears and start paying is form 3 term one fees. I will use the remaining amount to construct an decent house for my family since the one I have is very small and I use it as a kitchen and gallery for the same time. This will be a great transformation something that I have longed for.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of the day waking up healthy with my family despite the challenges of life gives me hope and strength to work hard for a better future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Charcoal vending activity is what I have been relying on for my family upkeep. Despite this job being laborious and tiresome it earns me a peanut which I mostly spend it on food. I am forced to borrow loan from community groups in order to pay school fees something that has lowered my dignity because I always fail to repay the loan back. Therefore I consider lack of I reliable source of income being my biggest hardship.
