How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I do. With the first transfer I received, I managed to immediately buy one dairy cow at Kes. 52000. I believe this cow will be my biggest source of income in future because I will be able to milk and sell dairy milk to my neighbours or even supply it to different dairy farms. The money I will get from this supply, I believe will be able to pay for my children school fees and even buy food and other basic needs for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I did not have a house or a cow but Icon proudly says that God has been good. GiveDirectly has done its best by uplifting people like me in life. I do appreciate it so much. There is nothing bad I have seen with the organisation.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The second transfer helped me in buying 32 pieces of iron sheets at Kes. 20800. Paid contractors Kes. 10000 to build the house and bought seven poles at Kes. 31500 after I had topped up my savings to the transfer I received and the remaining amount bought food in the house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9am when I was tilling my land ready for planting season when I received a message on my phone.Upon checking, it was an MPESA message confirming a receipt of my first transfer. I was so excited and I immediately went an informed my wife and she was equally excited.I planned on going to withdraw the following day since we had planned for it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the acquisition of a dairy cow.A lot has changed as I am no longer going to buy milk in a daily basis like before. It is going to save us the daily expense so that we can use to buy other household items.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawal of the transfer,we had agreed with my wife that we prioritize on buying a dairy cow. With Kshs.50,000 I bought a cow and calf.Currently we are milking the cow and it gives us three litres of milk per day which can fully sustain us and hoping in future it can gives more so that we can sell to earn an extra income. With the remaining amount ,we budgeted to buy clothes for our children and buy food which can sustain us for a couple of months as we wait for the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My area is quite arid. We cannot do large scale and productive farming due to the type of soil and also erratic rains. Receiving this money, we plan to buy 10 sheep each at KSH 5,000 because they seem to do well in this region, are short-breeders and do not require a lot of care. I also plan to put up a cosmetic shop for my wife with KSH 40,000 of the transfer.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is during lunch hour because my family has had something to eat and also some left for the evening.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I can say that the biggest hardship that I have faced is job security. I had a job but I was laid off because the business I was working with recorded low sales. Fending for my family without a job and some income is quite hard.
