How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different because I used to live a low life. I feel like I am a different human being with life. I will now have a bigger and better house and my family will also feed better from the retail shop that has been well stocked.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I just thank GiveDirectly for the transfers they gave us. We are not complaining on anything.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
My son withdrew and is keeping my money. He is using the money to build for me a bigger house because the one I am living in has a small space that cannot accommodate me with my children and my grandchildren. My son is also using some money out of my transfer to expand his retail shop. We all depend on the shop and expanding it means we can feed and live better.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The stock which I was operating with in my shop was not adequate to serve many customers and I was really bored of stocking the same types of products. However, with the coming of GiveDirectly to our village and giving us the transfer, then I bought a new stock of diversified products which can serve many customers and generate more income. To me, restocking my shop is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the notification early in the morning. On checking to confirm who the sender was, I realized that it was from GiveDirectly, informing me that my first transfer had finally been sent into my Mpesa account. I was greatly overjoyed and happy for the financial support which I never expected to get in my life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I am operating a small shop in our local village from which I earn income from the daily sales I make. My desire has been to diversify my products in order to generate more income. Givedirectly has enabled me to achieve this through the transfers I received from them because I purchased and added different stock of goods to the shop thus attracting an increased number of clients which eventually increased the daily income unlike before. The shop is the only source of income from which enables me to meet the daily basic needs for my family like foodstuffs and other necessities. I also purchased building materials that include iron sheets and building poles in order to construct a new spacious house because the one I currently live in is small and cannot accommodate us all. I am glad that very soon I will be moving into a new house, which has been my greatest desire for years, through the financial support from GiveDirectly.
